    No full text

Dentre as raças localmente adaptadas, a Crioula Lageana e a Caracu apresentaram as maiores frequências do haplótipo TW.

Brazil’s economy – 1971–2008. Growth patterns and structural change

    No full text
Growth cycles are well documented and studied phenomena in the LDCs; in the case of Latin America, they are often related to the evolution of the conditions of international liquidity (Amado et al., 2007). But, in general, growth in such countries tends to be less stable than in developed ones, as those economies are often constrained by a variety of domestic and international constraints, among them, balance-of- payments constraints. This has been true also of our case study hereafter, the Brazilian economy: at the beginning of the 1960s and in the 1980s, and again, more recently, during the second half of the 1990s following the financial crises of Mexico in 1995, Asia in 1997 and Russia in 1998. The unfolding of the current major crisis will surely offer more evidence, urging a fresh reflection on comparative growth dynamics

However, according to ecological studies, their vulnerability might be less severe than initially thought. Thus, a realistic forecast of species survival and Antarctic biodiversity should be based on studies from a variety of species under consideration of ecological factors. The limpet Nacella concinna is often found in the rocky intertidal and sublittoral zones of the Antarctic Peninsula and adjacent subantarctic islands. This review summarizes most of the available information on the biology of this limpet, one of the most conspicuous invertebrates of the intertidal zone. There is some evidence that adult N. concinna are physiologically flexible and can acclimate to 3 A degrees C. However, the requirements of the larval stage are poorly known, thus precluding realistic predictions of how elevated temperatures will affect N. concinna populations. Data on physiological performance (righting ability, tenacity and radula rasping rate) under different temperatures could provide a useful baseline for further field investigations on the effects of warming. The species could be used as model organism for investigating the biological effects of ongoing global warming on slow-growing Antarctic ectotherms. Nacella concinna might also be a better biomonitor for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons than other Antarctic mollusks.[Suda, Cecilia N. Geometrical investigation of cooling channels with two alternated isothermal blocks under forced convective turbulent flow

    No full text
The present work performs a numerical analysis of the geometrical investigation of a two-dimensional channel with two alternated isothermal rectangular blocks subjected to turbulent forced convective flows. Constructal Design associated with Exhaustive Search is used to investigate the influence of the geometry of the isothermal blocks over the performance of the cooling convective flows in a multi-objective viewpoint, i.e., considering the pressure drop and heat transfer rate. The time-averaged equations of continuity, momentum, and energy conservation are solved with the finite volume method. The k–ω shear stress transport model is used for the closure of turbulence. The effect of the two proposed degrees of freedom, the height/length ratio of the two blocks (H1/ L1 and H2/ L2) , is analyzed in relation to the proposed objectives. Regarding the thermal purpose, the geometry with the highest insertion into the channel led to the best performance, while the opposite configuration led to the best fluid dynamic performance. This behavior was similar to that previously found in the literature for forced convective laminar flows. For a multi-objective perspective, the use of technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution indicated that asymmetric blocks led to the best multi-objective performance when both performance indicators had the same weight

Polymorphisms in the prion protein gene of cattle breeds from Brazil.

One of the alterations that occur in the PRNP gene in bovines is the insertion/deletion (indel) of base sequences in specific regions, such as indels of 12-base pairs (bp) in intron 1 and of 23- bp in the promoter region. The deletion allele of 23 bp is associated with susceptibility to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) as well as the presence of the deletion allele of 12 bp. In the present study, the variability of nucleotides in the promoter region and intron 1 of the PRNP gene was genotyped for the Angus, Canchim, Nellore and Simmental bovine breeds to identify the genotype profiles of resistance and/or susceptibility to BSE in each animal. Genomic DNA was extracted for amplification of the target regions of the PRNP gene using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and specific primers. The PCR products were submitted to electrophoresis in agarose gel 3% and sequencing for genotyping. With the exception of the Angus breed, most breeds exhibited a higher frequency of deletion alleles for 12 bp and 23 bp in comparison to their respective insertion alleles for both regions. These results represent an important contribution to understanding the formation process of the Brazilian herd in relation to bovine PRNP gene polymorphisms
