The Italian payback effect: the causal impact of the great recession on political discontent

    No full text
Grounding on the theories of economic voting and political opposition, this paper investigates whether the Italian Local Labour Markets (LLMs) most affected by the Great Recession reacted in the ballot box voting against the domestic institutions or in favour of anti-European parties. We exploit a recent econometric technique in the counterfactual framework, which adopts a non-parametric generalisation of the difference-in-differences estimator. Our findings show a causal negative impact on the share of Berlusconi's party, the incumbent party during the crisis, statistically significant in those LLMs with the lowest institutional quality and in the Centre and in the Islands of Italy. We find no causal effect on the anti-European vote whatsoever. People living in the LLMs that suffered the most the effects of the Great Recession used their vote to harm the party in charge, which they deemed responsible for the economic consequences, with a payback effect

Transplant of the teres major in the treatment of irreparable injuries of the rotator cuff (long-term analysis of results).

Purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of muscle transfer of the teres major in the treatment of irreparable posterosuperior injuries of the rotator cuff. Long-term monitoring of the results obtained in 20 patients treated at our clinic using this method are reported, comparing the data obtained in evaluations of results with preoperative values. Clinical evaluations were obtained using the Constant Score System, while X-ray examination showed the presence of osteoarticular modifications, and MRI and electromyography the preserved morphology and function of transplant. The mean Constant Score increased from 31.6 points preoperatively to 66.1 points postoperatively at the time of follow-up. At follow-up, MRI allowed us to evaluate any fatty degeneration of the muscle fibers of transfer and the integrity of tendinous insertion on the humeral greater tuberosity. The obtained results allowed us to reveal the advantages and the disadvantages of teres major transplant in irreparable posterosuperior ruptures of the cuff

Very-high-energy gamma rays and neutrinos: The search for PeVatrons

    No full text
Since its discovery more than one hundred years ago, the origin of the cosmic-ray flux measured on Earth is still unknown: in order to explain the energy region below the knee, supernova remnants are usually addressed, even though no clear indication of PeV energies has been observed so far in such a kind of sources. However, recently, the Galactic Center region has been detected as a multi-TeV gamma-ray emitter: in the case of hadronic origin of the radiation, this would imply the existence of PeV primary protons. Hence, this detection triggers the search for a PeVatron at the center of our Galaxy. In order to identify the origin of the emission, a multi-messenger strategy appears suitable: in fact, in the hadronic scenario, neutrinos would constitute a natural counterpart of the electromagnetic emission. The fundamental role of neutrinos in disentangling the origin of the observed gamma rays is here discussed

Chinese or Not Chinese? Investigating Early Bronze Buddhas

    No full text
This article reopens the discussion on two celebrated early Buddhist bronzes, one in the Harvard Art Museums seated in dhyanamudra and with flaming shoulders, and the other in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, dated to 338. The article suggests that the Harvard Buddha is not Chinese, as generally believed, in light of a series of iconographical details, the most important of which—the dhyana mudra—has been overlooked in the previous scholarly research. Focusing on the form this mudra takes in India and China, the author shows that it underwent significant modifications as it moved east, which has important implications for the wider field of the transfer of Buddhist art to China

From Biomass to Bio-Based Polymers: Exploitation of Vanillic Acid for the Design of New Copolymers with Tunable Properties

    No full text
Vanillic acid represents a potentially interesting bio-based building block for the production of new aliphatic-aromatic polymers, characterized by thermal properties similar to those of the analogous terephthalic polyesters. However, poly(ethylene vanillate) proved to be a very brittle material, probably due to a very high degree of crystallinity, and, then, not suitable for melt processing. Therefore, the synthesis of copolymers, based on vanillic acid and pentadecalactone is considered as a strategy to obtain new polymeric materials with a low degree of crystallinity, tunable properties, and better performances. The synthesis of these fully bio-based random copolymers is successful. The thermal properties have been studied in order to correlate chemical structure and final performances. The polymers proved to be processable and films are obtained, suggesting possible applications of the copolymers in a new sustainable flexible packaging

Didactic description of the different pathologies of the elbow and of their surgical treatment More than 150 color figures, numerous tables and original line drawings illustrate the content and enhance understanding Written by world-renowned elbow orthopaedic surgeons A useful tool for practitioners, students, and medical residents alike The complexity of elbow anatomy and function often leads to an adverse response to traumatic and inflammatory conditions. For this reason, many standard orthopaedic texts advise caution regarding the surgical management of traumatic and degenerative lesions. The aim of this book is to didactically describe the different pathologies of the elbow and their surgical treatment, thus helping to reduce the incidence of complications such as stiff elbow, heterotypic bone and joint instability, and degenerative arthritis. The volume, written by world-renowned elbow orthopaedic surgeons and enhanced by colour images and tables, will be warmly welcomed not only by practitioners, but also by students and medical residents.Content Level » Professional/practitioner Keywords » arthroplasty - fractures - imaging and clinical evaluation - instability - prosthesis Related subjects » Medicine - Orthopedic
