Dynamic nonlinear analyses for the 4-storey infilled R/C frame: study of a retrofitting solution
A research project on assessment and retrofitting of R/C frame structures is currently being developed under the research programme of the ICONS TMR-research network. This paper presents and discusses the preliminary experimental results from a 4-storey bare frame representative of the common practice of 40~50 years ago in most south European countries and devotes special attention to the study of a retrofitting solution based on bracing and rubber dissipaters, which intends to increase stiffness and damping reducing consequently the earthquake deformation demands.O estudo aqui apresentado concentra-se numa solução de reforço de um pórtico utilizando contraventamentos (k-bracing) com perfis de aço em conjunto com elementos elastoméricos de dissipação. Os resultados das análises não lineares da estrutura com e sem alvenaria e com reforço são apresentados e discutidos. Na segunda parte da comunicação apresentam-se os resultados experimentais já disponíveis e discute-se o problema da modelação recorrendo aos resultados experimentais e comparando os resultados obtidos com diferentes tipos de modelos

System model development and numerical simulation of low-head pumped hydro storage
To tackle the growing demand for grid-scale energy storage, the ALPHEUS project proposes a novel low-head pumped hydro storage system aimed for coastal application in countries where the topography does not allow for traditional high-head storage. This system consists of a reversible pump-turbine technology with two contra-rotating runners coupled to their respective axial-flux motor-generators as well as a dedicated control, optimising for energy balancing and the provision of ancillary services. To better understand the integration and dynamic interaction of the individual components of the plant and to allow for the simulation of a wide variety of operating conditions and scenarios, this research aims at developing a system model coupling the hydraulic, mechanical and electrical components. Numerical results are compared and verified based on CFD simulations. A control-oriented wind turbine dynamic simulation framework which resolves local atmospheric conditions
Wind turbines may experience local weather perturbation, which is not taken into account by the commonly-used wind turbine simulation packages. Without this information, it is extremely challenging to evaluate the controller performance with regard to the effect of the variation of local atmospheric conditions. On the other side, it is too late and costly to wait until field test time. To fill this gap, in this paper, we develop a control-oriented turbine dynamic simulation framework to evaluate the controller performance considering the perturbation of local atmospheric conditions. This goal is achieved by integrating an internal wind turbine (IWT) model in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulation tool. The proposed framework is implemented on a 5MW reference wind turbine, where the effects of the local atmospheric conditions are illustrated. Multi-criteria analysis to rank offshore renewable technologies to support deep-water oil and gas production
Around 5% of the global offshore oil and gas production is consumed as fuel to power the platforms emitting around 200 million tons of CO2 per year. Adopting renewable energy can increase the oil and gas available for export by reducing internal consumption and opening space for the processing plant. This work presents an improvement to the classical analytical hierarchy process multi-criteria decision analysis method, where a viability check phased is introduced before the criteria weighting. The proposed methodology is then applied to a case in Brazil, where 10MW of continuous electrical power is required by a subsea CO2 separation and reinjection system to be installed at 2000m water depth and 160 km from shore. The selection criteria include technical, economic, and environmental aspects weighted with the contribution of experts. Characterization of rock mass by geostatistical analysis at the Masua Mine ( Sardinia, Italy).
The purpose of the present paper is to show the application of geostatistical analysis to rock mass characterization, with the Masua Mine (Sardinia, Italy) being the case study. Following a brief description of geostatistical methods and use of 'Variograms' and 'Kriging', the criteria applied for quantification of rock mass properties are discussed. The analysis of rock mass data by geostatistical procedures allows one to infer the variability of rock quality such as defined by the RMR index. Additionally, the deformability and strength parameters are obtained for numerical modelling of mine structures. It is stated that the use of geostatistical methods such as 'Kriging' is more likely to reflect the expected rock mass mechanical behaviour.-from Author
