Role of dietary habits and diet in caries occurrence and severity among urban adolescent school children
To identify the role of dietary habits (type of diet, skipping meals, snacking in-between meals and frequency of visits to fast food restaurants) in caries occurrence and severity. To explore the correlation between frequency of intake of selected foods and dental caries. A cross-sectional study was carried out on adolescent children (n = 916) of age 13-19, following a two-stage random sampling technique. Data were collected using a pretested questionnaire. Questionnaire included demographic details, dietary habits of children and food frequency table that listed selected food items. The dependent variable-dental caries was measured using the decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) index. The prevalence of dental caries in this study population was 36.7% (95% confidence interval: 33.58-39.82). The mean DMFT was 1.01 (±1.74). No statistically significant difference found between caries occurrence and type of diet (P = 0.07), skipping meals (P = 0.86), frequency of eating in fast food stalls (0.86) and snacking in between meals (0.08). Mean DMFT values were higher among nonvegetarians and among children who had the habit of snacking in between meals. Frequency of intake of selected food items showed that mean frequency intake of carbonated drinks and confectionery was higher among children who presented with caries when compared to caries-free children (P = 0.000). Significant correlation found between mean DMFT and mean frequency intake of carbonated drinks and confectionery. Odds ratios were calculated for the same for frequency ≥4 times/day for confectionery and ≥4/week for carbonated drinks and results discussed. Frequent intake of carbonated drinks and confectionery is harmful to oral health that eventually reflects on general health. Educating the adolescent children on healthy dietary habits should be put in the forefront

In this paper we describe the approaches adopted to generate the five runs submitted to ImageClefPhoto 2009 by the University of Glasgow. The aim of our methods is to exploit document diversity in the rankings. All our runs used text statistics extracted from the captions associated to each image in the collection, except one run which combines the textual statistics with visual features extracted from the provided images.
The results suggest that our methods based on text captions significantly improve the performance of the respective baselines, while the approach that combines visual features with text statistics shows lower levels of improvements

Effects of different types of organic manures on evolved CO2 in saline and non-saline soils at different incubation periods
In Sri Lanka, salinization of agricultural lands is a serious problem prevailing in arid and semi-arid regions of the country. A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted at Eastern University of Sri Lanka, from July to September 2017 to investigate the CO2-C evolved dynamics of salt-affected soils, amended with four different organic manures. A bulk soil sample was collected at 0-20 cm depth from a salt-affected area at Vaharai. Factorial combinations of saline and non-saline soils with four types of organic manures namely, Poultry Manure (PM), Farm Yard Manure (FYM), Glyricidia and Partially Burnt Paddy Husk (PBPH), were used at the rate of 10 t/ha. At the Lab trapped CO2 content was measured by recommended absorption and titration method. Data were analyzed using Statistical Analytical System (SAS) and means were separated by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results revealed that under saline condition (at EC=7.13 dS/m), the highest amount of CO2-C released (352.00 mg/100g soil) was observed in Glyricidia amended soil, followed by FYM (289.62mg/100g soil), PM (205.70mg/100g soil) and PBPH (96.43mg/100g soil). The amount of CO2-C evolved under non (or very lower) saline condition (at EC=0.35dS/m), ranged from 54.23mg CO2-C/100g (PBPH) to 498.13mg CO2- C /100g (Glyricidia amended) soils. The results of this study suggested that the application of glyricidia leaves proved to be the best organic manure (of the four considered) to improve the microbial activity by releasing the larger amount of CO2-C in saline environment. Hence, incorporation of glyricidia could be used as an ameliorative way in improving saline soil
AXES at TRECVID 2012: KIS, INS, and MED
The AXES project participated in the interactive instance search task (INS), the known-item search task (KIS), and the multimedia event detection task (MED) for TRECVid 2012. As in our TRECVid 2011 system, we used nearly identical search systems and user interfaces for both INS and KIS. Our interactive INS and KIS systems focused this year on using classifiers trained at query time with positive examples collected from external search engines. Participants in our KIS experiments were media professionals from the BBC; our INS experiments were carried out by students and researchers at Dublin City University. We performed comparatively well in both experiments. Our best KIS run found 13 of the 25 topics, and our best INS runs outperformed all other submitted runs in terms of P@100. For MED, the system presented was based on a minimal number of low-level descriptors, which we chose to be as large as computationally feasible. These descriptors are aggregated to produce high-dimensional video-level signatures, which are used to train a set of linear classifiers. Our MED system achieved the second-best score of all submitted runs in the main track, and best score in the ad-hoc track, suggesting that a simple system based on state-of-the-art low-level descriptors can give relatively high performance.
