No full textSir Thomas Fowell Buxton (1786–1845) was a noted social reformer and one of the leading members of the campaign to abolish slavery. Buxton had family connections to the Quakers and became an associate of Elizabeth Fry in campaigning for prison reform. He was elected an MP in 1818 and from 1825 he became the leader of the abolitionist movement in Parliament following William Wilberforce's retirement from politics. This biography, compiled by his son Charles Buxton and first published in 1848, provides an intimate and detailed account of Buxton's character and involvement with social reform and the abolition movement, culminating in the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act. The inclusion of Buxton's letters to family, friends and colleagues provides valuable insights into his character and his thoughts on the progress of the abolition movement and other political events connected to the campaign for abolition. </jats:p

I enclose printed particulars of a translation of Villon’s Poetry, by Payne, whom you doubtless know as author of “The Masque of Shadows,” “Intaglios,” &c. In common with a number of literary men, I am anxious to see the book in print; and [p. 2] there seems no such ready means to that end as a private subscription.
Mr Payne was not disposed to move in the matter beyond the circle of his own immediate friends; so he has placed his subscription list in my hands, that I may see if the necessary complement of subscribers cannot be obtained by seeking a little further.
[p. 3] May I reckon upon you? If so, pray do not trouble to write in reply, but kindly fill up the subscription form and return it to me at the above address.

Get PDFBiographical NoteAnthony “Tony” Wayne Buxton was born in Augusta, Maine, on December 19, 1946, and grew up in Readfield, Maine. His father, Wayne Wilson Buxton, an artist and writer, and his mother, Margaret (Murray) Buxton, an artist and teacher, both came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tony attended Bowdoin College, being graduated in 1968, then served in the Army from 1968-1970. He received his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1978 and began working for the firm Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios in 1980. He co-founded the Energy Law Institute. Tony has served on both the Democratic State Committee and the Democratic Party as treasurer and chair. He was heavily involved in several of George Mitchell\u27s political campaigns in 1974, 1982, and 1988.
