A Tribute to Fritz Dolak, Copyright Librarian of Ball State University
The community of copyright professionals lost a champion recently, with the passing of Frank J. (“Fritz”) Dolak on July 14, 2021. Fritz was the copyright librarian at Ball State University, and he was known nationally for the series of annual copyright conferences he organized and led in Indiana, and for his leadership in addressing the use of copyrighted works for the enhancement of distance education. He came to copyright after years of music, military service, and more. A hallmark of his life was bringing clarity and humor to serious challenges, starting with his family name. He had a simple family name that was routinely mispronounced. As Fritz would tell anyone who would listen, “The name is ‘Doo-Lok,’ as in ‘Do Lock the Door.’” Fritz was a professional colleague to many editors and contributors to JCEL. Three of his copyright colleagues—Dwayne K. Buttler, Kenneth D. Crews, and Donna L. Ferullo—worked with him for many years, and they share memories of Dr. Fritz Dolak and his influence and leadership. The story of Fritz Dolak is a story of kindness, generosity, and inspiration

Why copyright matters (or does it?): A sometimes conflicting tale of copyright, contracts, (aka “licenses”), scholarly communication, and policy choices
Copyright is omnipresent in scholarly communication (and teaching, learning, research, digital technology, music, video, okay, you get the idea). Protection happens automatically under copyright law, leaving users to ponder strategies for managing copyright challenges and make meaningful decisions about using copyrighted works. Copyright provides some exceptions that permit specific uses, including fair use, and offers a foundation to reframe some sharing relationships through licensing (contract) strategies – think publication agreement, Creative Commons, and other positive licensing possibilities. This conversation will introduce you to the principles of copyright and frame a few central issues of scholarly communication, emphasizing your questions and thoughts on how copyright influences your work

Metaphor For a Post-White Horizon
This project is a counternarrative, in the tradition of Richard Delgado’s The Rodrigo Chronicles, using critical race theory’s storytelling methodology. We present a discussion between a Black scholar and white scholar sharing their experiences as they explore the relationship between Blackness/whiteness and anti-Blackness/white supremacy. The crux of this counternarrative lies in the intersection between the hopelessness one Black scholar feels toward racial progress in America and the desperation of a white scholar as they process the possibilities for a post-white ontological future within the Western academy in the wake of the January 6th Insurrection. The counter-story integrates Afropessimistic thought with the creativity of Afrofuturism to comment on the uses and abuses of Black labor under the white gaze. The conclusion of the counter-story argues for the need of a post-white futurism that imagines a possible future without whiteness and a future that is also not subsistent upon the foundational abuse and overuse of Black labor.

Dwayne Kwaysee Wright (he/him/his), J.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives at the Graduate School of Education and Human Development which is part of the George Washington University. His research and social activism seek to advance educational opportunity and equity for all students, particularly those historically oppressed and marginalized in American society.

Dr. Tyler Derreth (he/him/his) is the associate director of SOURCE and faculty in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society at Johns Hopkins University. His research concentrates on urban community–university partnerships, critical pedagogies, and equitable educational practices. He centers his research agenda on issues of social justice, racism, and identity.
