The commissions and compositions of works for Benny Goodman and chamber ensemble: history, style and clarinet writing

    No full text
Frequently referred to as the “King of Swing,” Benny Goodman (1909-1986) is well-known for his jazz clarinet playing. Yet Goodman should also be recognized as a classical clarinet player and for his role in contributing repertoire to the classical clarinet genre. A number of these works call for various arrangements of chamber ensembles. Béla Bartók’s Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano, Alan Shulman’s Rendezvous for Clarinet and Strings, Morton Gould’s Benny’s Gig 8 Duos for Clarinet and Double Bass, and Allen Shawn’s Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano are all a part of this category. To gain an understanding of how each of these works fit into both Goodman’s long career and the output of Bartók, Shulman, Gould, and Shawn, this thesis presents the history and circumstances leading up to the composition of each work. Each piece is compared with other works by the composers in order to discover what compositional style may have been adapted in writing for Goodman. Additional consideration is given to the popularity of each work in performances and recordings.U of I Only Restriction set for Item 104055 on 2017-11-09T20:12:52Z with date by [email protected] by David Butler ([email protected]) on 2017-11-09T20:26:31Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Pamela Shuler_thesis.pdf: 3384489 bytes, checksum: 639a450a129b373987528b53e18ab2d9 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2017-11-09T20:26:31Z (GMT).

    No full text

Organizational Factors and Office Workers’ Health After the World Trade Center Terrorist Attacks: Long-Term Physical Symptoms, Psychological Distress, and Work Productivity

    No full text
Objective: To assess if organizational factors are predictors of workers' health and productivity after the World Trade Center attacks. Methods: We conducted a survey of 750 workers and compared those who had direct exposures to the World Trade Center attacks (south of Canal Street workers; primary victims) with those less directly exposed (north of Canal Street workers; other victims and non-victims).Results: South of Canal Street workers reported headache more frequently than north of Canal Street workers did (P = 0.0202). Primary victims reported headache and cough more frequently than did other victims and non-victims (P = 0.0086 and 0.0043, respectively). Defensive organizational culture was an independent predictor of cough and job stress, and job stress was an independent predictor of on-the-job productivity losses. Conclusion: Organizational variables may modify health and productivity outcomes after a large-scale traumatic event in the workplace. This research was supported in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Grant 5 R21 OH007713-02, and the NIEHS sponsored UMDNJ Center for Environmental Exposures and Disease, Grant NIEHS P30ES005022.This is a non-final version of an article published in final form in Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (50(2):112-25, 2008 Feb) a publication of Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins.
