    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Busby-Gilbert Tile Feasibility and Valuation

    No full text
[ABSTRACT ONLY; NO FULL TEXT] Custom Consulting delivered this report after consulting for Busby-Gilbert, a handmade custom tile manufacturing company in Los Angeles County. Custom Consulting assisted Busby-Gilbert with analysis pertaining to the attractiveness of the business to properly assess their industry feasibility. To aid in our research, the client provided internal data including financial statements, access to website analytics and institutional knowledge. Primary research was conducted through personal interviews as well as a review of the company's website, social media accounts, and visitation to the manufacturing facility. IBISWorld, the North American Tile Association, the Handmade Tile Association comprise a portion of the secondary data sources used by our team to create a more complete analysis for the client. Our research indicates Busby-Gilbert operates in a highly competitive industry. Stiff competition means that firms must remain flexible to shifts in consumer habits and remain aware of their competitor's actions. The tile manufacturing industry is facing growing threats from substitute products such as vinyl, concrete, and wood due to rising production costs of other materials. Firms have leveraged economies of scale and automation to undercut prices for ceramic tiles and flooring in order to remain competitive in the industry. My contributions to this project included detailing the limitations of the firm for the internal analysis, as well as analyzing the potential of new entrants into the industry and the power of suppliers for the industry analysis. I consolidated four years of the client's financial performance into statements including the balance sheet, the statement of cash flows and an equity statement to help assess the client's financial wellbeing. I served as the primary communication liaison which involved scheduling client interviews and meetings with industry advisors. I helped guide the team create recommendations that aligned with both the scope of the project and the needs of the client. I ensured this report shared a common voice and confirmed that all cited evidence shared an identical conclusion. The team's full written findings and concise recommendations were both presented to the client. A minimum of 10 hours per week were spent researching, analyzing and drafting this report since the beginning of February 2023. Custom Consulting's recommendations sought to increase Busby-Gilbert's attractiveness within the industry and allow the client to make guided strategic decisions in the future
