    Macropore formation and litter incorporation are two results of earthworm [Lumbricus terrestris (L.)] activities that can influence trophic dynamics inside burrows. Thus, mesocosms were constructed to examine changes in microbial biomass and microfaunal communities inside artificial compared with earthworm burrows. Four treatments were established: (i) no worms (CTRL); (ii) unlined, artificial burrows (ARTF); (iii) corn (Zea mays L.) leaf litter-lined, artificial burrows (LEAF); and (iv) Lumbricus terrestris (L.) burrows (WORM). There were no consistent differences in community structures between unlined, artificial burrows and control soils during a 16-wk incubation. In contrast, protozoan numbers were elevated throughout the experiment in LEAF and WORM. A succession of nematode abundances occurred in LEAF, with plant parasitic and Tylenchid nematode numbers peaking at 5 wk, followed by high bacterivorous and fungivorous nematode numbers. In WORM, bacterivorous nematode numbers and active bacterial biomass were elevated for 1 and 3 wk, respectively, before declining. Active fungal biomass increased in WORM, whereas fungivorous nematodes were inhibited in earthworm burrows. While litter incorporation appeared to accelerate the rate of trophic interactions in artificial burrows, the effects of earthworms appeared to transcend that of litter translocation into soil, with earthworms differentially selecting for particular food web dynamics

    Transformasi Burrows-Wheeler adalah sebuah algoritma yang digunakan di dalam beberapa teknik kompresi data. Transformasi Burrows-Wheeler diawali dengan merubah input untaian s menjadi matriks M1 yang baris-barisnya merupakan hasil pergeseran untaian s secara siklik, dilanjutkan dengan merubah matriks M1 menjadi matriks M2 yang diperoleh dengan cara mengurutkan baris-baris matriks M1 secara leksikografi dan akhirnya mendapatkan output berupa untaian F dan L. F berisi semua simbol dari s yang telah terurut sedangkan L merupakan kolom terakhir dari matriks M2. Invers dari transformasi Burrows-Wheeler membawa kembali untaian L, dengan bantuan untaian F yang merupakan baris pertama matriks M2 kembali menjadi untaian s tanpa harus mengkontruksi satu pun matriks. Karena untaian s dan L memiliki simbol-simbol yang sama, hanya berbeda urutan, maka jelas ada permutasi yang membawa untaian s menjadi L dan permutasi baliknya yang membawa L kembali menjadi s. \ud Tugas akhir ini bukan hanya meneliti dan mencari permutasi-permutasi yang merubah s menjadi L dan sebaliknya, tetapi juga menyelidiki bagaimana balikan permutasi yang merubah s menjadi matriks M1, M2 dan L bisa diperoleh tanpa menggunakan matriks M1 dan M2. Sebagai hasil tambahan, diberikan hasil program Maple berupa simulasi transformasi Burrows-Wheeler dan balikannya melalui Maplet dan beberapa permutasi-permutasi yang digunakan untuk merubah input untaian s menjadi L

    Many-electron theory of resonant charge transfer: Role of surface states in He and He+ scattering off Si(100)

    A many-electron theory of resonant charge transfer, originally formulated for the scattering of an atom with an empty valence orbital from a surface, is extended to treat the case where the valence orbital is initially occupied by one or two electrons. The scattering of He and He+ from the Si(001) surface is investigated. The interaction is assumed to be with the narrow band of surface states, and not the much wider bulk band.     New taxa, combinations and records of Pteridophyta from southern and central Africa

    Four new taxa of ferns are described and illustrated from southern Africa:  Ophioglossum convexum J.E. Burrows, Mohria caffrorum (L.) Desv. var. ferruginea J.E. & S.M. Burrows,  Marsilea farinosa Launert subsp. arrecta J.E. Burrows and Asplenium sebungweense J.E. Burrows. The combination of Grammitis rigescens (Bory ex Willd.) J.E. Burrows is made. Ophioglossum thomasii Clausen,  O. rube Hum Welw. ex A. Braun.  Vinana ensiformis Swartz and Asplenium buettneri Hieron. ex Brause are new records for Zimbabwe, while Hymenophyllum splendidum V.d. Bosch and  Asplenium uhligii Hieron. are new records for Malawi and Zimbabwe. Actiniopteris semiflabellata Pichi-Sermolli is recorded from Namibia and Thelypteris oppositiformis (C. Chr.) Ching is recorded from the Transvaal

    Measurement of disorder in non-periodic sequences

    An information theoretic measure is introduced to compare the disorder in non-periodic sequences. It is shown that the measure correctly distinguishes quasiperiodic and aperiodic sequences which have been deduced from earlier studies using diffraction patterns, although it is often necessary to use a set of measures, depending on the order of the source used.
