The evolution of embryonic creek systems in a recently inundated large open coast managed realignment site
Managed realignment (MR) schemes are being implemented to compensate for the degradation of coastal habitats. However, evidence suggests that MR sites have lower biodiversity than anticipated, which has been linked to poor drainage. Despite creek networks playing an important role in enhancing site drainage in natural intertidal environments, there remains a shortage of data on the formation and evolution of creeks within MR sites. This study evaluates creek development at the Medmerry Managed Realignment Site, UK. Creek development is investigated using differential global positioning system (dGPS) data, supported by sedimentological analyses and a high-resolution digital surface model (DSM) derived from images taken using a small unmanned aerial vehicle. Measurements indicated that creeks will develop relatively quickly, but are influenced by differences in the sub-surface sedimentological conditions. A suitable level of agreement was found between the DSM and dGPS measurements, demonstrating the appropriateness of this method to study creek development within intertidal environments at a higher resolution than traditional surveying techniques. These results are used to propose the collapse of sub-surface piping as the primary creek formation mechanism. Findings are discussed in terms of increasing the success of MR schemes and enhancing site design to maximise the ecosystem services provided

Alexandria: A City and Myth
Synopsis
Alexandria was one of the most important cities of the ancient world, with achievements in the arts, sciences and religion. For the first time the author seeks to understand the wider picture, the longer period of evolution as a city, as both an urban concept and a literary and historical ideal. He does this by bringing together the disciplines of archaeology (including his own recent fieldwork), anthropology, history, geography, oral history, art and literature. As a result Alexandria is seen as a unique example of African urbanism, an Egyptian city facing the wider Mediterranean world, which became an archetype for social, religious and cultural cosmopolitanism. Deleuze and the author
This thesis argues that Gilles Deleuze, as philosopher, reader, and critic, recognised the
central importance of a defined authorial subjectivity, closely associated with a
philosophical or intellectual project, and that his analyses of philosophy, literature, visual art
and cinema were shaped and determined by his recognition of that authority. In this
respect, my reading challenges those critics who find in the work of Deleuze an assault on
‘author-centric’ interpretations of texts, and more generally on the concept of a unified self,
and which uphold experimentation on the part of the reader or critic rather than
interpretation. I argue that Deleuze has a coherent and meaningful conception of an author
as a consciousness which persists through time, learns, plans and makes projects,
differentiates itself from the work of other authors, is inspired and creative, takes positions
in relation to the inheritance of artistic and philosophical traditions, and which is capable of
entering into collaboration with others.
Through close reading of Deleuze’s texts, I demonstrate that he consistently relies on the
authorial function to impose unity and coherence on the distinctive - and often remarkable
- body of work of an individual theorist or practitioner. I argue that the historical, political
and social situation of an author is of great importance to the analysis of a text. Finally,
unlike Roland Barthes or other critics invested in the ‘death’ or displacement of the author, I
argue that Deleuze considers the competing interpretations of a text advanced by the
reader or spectator to be of little or no importance
Sussex coastal habitats inshore pilot II: Marine habitat and bathymetry modelling
The Sussex Coastal Habitats Inshore Pilot (SCHIP) 2 project follows on from the preceding SCHIP 1 project, which was led by the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA), working in partnership with Sussex Wildlife Trust, and funded by the Environment Agency. The project aims to explore and analyse existing sea floor habitat and bathymetric data sets available for the Sussex IFCA district. These data are used to construct both a broad scale habitat model classified to European Nature Information System (EUNIS) level 3 and a detailed fine scale habitat model classified up to EUNIS level 6. In addition, a bathymetric model of the entire district is produced from survey data taken by IFCA’s patrol and research vessel ‘Watchful’. Four existing seabed habitat data sets (EUNIS Sussex 2010, JNCC UK Sea Map 2010, EUNIS South East, and RoxAnn) were converted into a single layer containing the features and attributes of all four individual shape files. EUNIS habitat values from all four polygon data sets were compared using a four way comparison of column values, and returned the number of matching values. This was carried out to compare all four data sets, and to provide a final layer which showed the level of agreement between layers and described the extent of known seabed habitats to EUNIS level 3. In order to create a finer-scale and continuous EUNIS habitat layer a Voronoi polygon method was developed and used. Voronoi polygons are presented as an independent method by which to convert point data into a polygon coverage and to divide up the seabed into EUNIS habitat codes. Within each voronoi polygon, any given location contained is closer to the known point in that polygon than any other known point (ESRI, 2007). All non-sampled locations are classified in accordance with the nearest known point Where survey point density is higher (more known points per unit area), smaller polygons are constructed and the data can show increased habitat variability. Areas where voronoi polygons are smaller are likely to represent seabed habitats more closely due to higher survey/point density. The predictive habitat maps suggest that A5 (sublittoral sediment) habitats are dominant throughout the district. A3 (Infralittoral rock and other hard substrata) and A4 (Circalittoral rock and other hard substrata) habitats are predicted in small areas. The EUNIS level 3 map is perhaps adequate as an indication of the overall habitat trends within this biologically significant region. However, the method has been applied up to EUNIS level 4, 5, and 6 at specified locations, where data are available, and facilitates more detailed biological interpretation at specific locations. Fine-scale seabed habitat models were validated in sample areas against contemporary MBES surveys and habitat maps to assess accuracy; validation suggested a strong associated with independent data. The study highlights the importance of citizen science data (e.g. Seasearch) in developing an increased understanding and knowledge of the habitats in this region and others throughout the UK. More developed seabed habitat maps are crucial for the success of current and future fisheries management

Formal consultations with the dead in Heliodorus and in a tale narrated within Apuleius’s Golden Ass allow us to develop a typology for novelistic necromancy that includes a necromancer, a ritual involving both words and magical substances, a difficult reanimation, and a testable prophecy. Apuleius includes another, less obviously necromantic posthumous parley between Aristomenes and Socrates at the beginning of the Golden Ass that may have significant implications for the interpretation of the work’s ending and therefore for the novel as a whole. The value of the historic urban landscape in post-industrial city of Paterson, New Jersey
This thesis examines the historic preservation issues facing Paterson, a post-industrial city in northern New Jersey. The role of Paterson’s local government is discussed in its actions and advocacy regarding the economic, social, and historic fabric of the city. The Paterson Historic Preservation Commission and Division, Department of Economic Development, Department of Community Development (CD), and the Housing Authority of the City of Paterson (HACP) are discussed in terms of their historic preservation strategies, policies, and decisions. This thesis additionally examines Lowell, a post-industrial city in Massachusetts, as a comparison study. The potential of small-Unmanned Aircraft Systems for the rapid detection of threatened unimproved grassland communities using an Enhanced Normalized Difference Vegetation Index.
The loss of unimproved grassland has led to species decline in a wide range of taxonomic groups. Agricultural intensification has resulted in fragmented patches of remnant grassland habitat both across Europe and internationally. The monitoring of remnant patches of this habitat is critically important, however, traditional surveying of large, remote landscapes is a notoriously costly and difficult task. The emergence of small-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) equipped with low-cost multi-spectral cameras offer an alternative to traditional grassland survey methods, and have the potential to progress and innovate the monitoring and future conservation of this habitat globally. The aim of this article is to investigate the potential of sUAS for rapid detection of threatened unimproved grassland and to test the use of an Enhanced Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ENDVI). A sUAS aerial survey is undertaken at a site nationally recognised as an important location for fragmented unimproved mesotrophic grassland, within the south east of England, UK. A multispectral camera is used to capture imagery in the visible and near-infrared spectrums, and the ENDVI calculated and its discrimination performance compared to a range of more traditional vegetation indices. In order to validate the results of analysis, ground quadrat surveys were carried out to determine the grassland communities present. Quadrat surveys identified three community types within the site; unimproved grassland, improved grassland and rush pasture. All six vegetation indices tested were able to distinguish between the broad habitat types of grassland and rush pasture; whilst only three could differentiate vegetation at a community level. The Enhanced Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ENDVI) was the most effective index when differentiating grasslands at the community level. The mechanisms behind the improved performance of the ENDVI are discussed and recommendations are made for areas of future research and study
