The development and preliminary validation of the Taiwanese Manual Ability Measure for Burns
No full textObjective: To develop and validate the Taiwanese Manual Ability Measure for Burns (T-MAM for Burns), a task-oriented functional evaluation tool to assess self-reported manual ability in burn patients. ;Design: A longitudinal study. ;Participants: A sample of 45 burn patients from burn rehabilitation centers with varying degrees of hand involvement. ;Methods: The preliminary testing version was formed by adding burn specific items to the Taiwanese version of the Manual Ability Measure. A field test was then conducted for item reduction and psychometric properties testing. ;Results: Out of 55 initial items, 20 were selected into the final version of the T-MAM for Burns. Psychometric analyses indicated that it was reliable (test-retest ICC = .99), with adequate concurrent validity with various other hand function tests (r = -.79 with the short form Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand, or, the QuickDASH) and discriminative validity (significant difference (t = 2.99, P = .005) between groups with unilateral vs. bilateral hand burns), and responsive (ES = .24 and .44 at one- and 3-month evaluations). ;Conclusion: This study shows that the T-MAM for Burns has great potential to be a functional outcome measure for burn rehabilitation. Book) and professional development books for their teachers. Since January 2015, Burns has also authored a regular blog about mathematics education. Here, Burns shares instructional ideas, classroom activities, and her own reflections on teaching. Mathematics teachers and tutors can browse previous blog entries by topic, including Assessment, Fractions, Real World Problems, and Video Clips. Most of these resources and ideas will be of interest to elementary and middle school educators, but many of these ideas could also be adapted for Adult Basic Education (ABE) classrooms as well. In addition, parents and caretakers of children, along with youth workers and youth librarians, may also be interested in this blog; many of Burns's ideas involve games and could be used to engage young learners in both formal and informal educational settings

Burns in Tanzania: Morbidity and Mortality, Causes and Risk Factors: A Review.
Get PDFBurn injuries in low and middle income countries still remain a significant health problem, even though numbers of burn injuries in high income countries have decreased showing that such events are not "accidents" but are usually preventable. WHO states that the vast majority (over 95%) of fire-related burns occur in low and middle income countries. Burn injuries are a major cause of prolonged hospital stays, disfigurement, disability, and death in Africa Region. Evidence shows that prevention strategies can work. However prevention strategies need to be tailored to the specific environment taking into account local risk factors and available resources. An examination of the patterns and causes of burns should allow site specific recommendations for interventions. This literature review, specific to the United Republic of Tanzania, was conducted by researching PubMed, SafetyLit, and African Journals on Line data bases for primary sources using key words <Tanzania> plus <burns, suicide, homicide, injury mortality, injury morbidity>. Two sets of student data collected as part of Bachelor's degree final dissertations at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences were used. In all, twenty two primary sources were found. Risk factors for burn morbidity in Tanzania are: 1/ a young age, especially years 1-3, 2/ home environment, especially around cooking fires, 3/ epilepsy, during seizures, and 4/ perceived inevitability of the incident. It was expected that ground level cooking fires would be found to be a risk factor, but several studies have shown non-significant results about raised cooking fires, types of fuel used, and cooking appliances. Risk factors for burn mortality are: being male, between 20-30 years of age, and being punished for alleged thieving by community mobs. An important factor in reducing burn morbidity, especially in children, is to educate people that burns are preventable in most cases and that most burns occur in the home around cooking fires. Children need to be kept away from fires. Epileptics should be monitored for medication and kept away from cooking fires as well. Community members need to be encouraged to bring wrong doers to the police

No full textThe National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Burns. Burns joined the Navy in June of 1943. He completed the Navy V-12 Program. He was commissioned as ensign in May of 1945, and assigned to a destroyer escort. They conducted submarine patrol. He worked in numerous departments aboard the ship, and they remained along the coast of Florida. He was transferred to California for amphibious training. Burns continued his service in the Navy, receiving his discharge in 1958
Physical rehabilitation of pediatric burns
Get PDFSignificant improvements have been made in the acute treatment of pediatric burn injuries over the past 3 decades which have significantly decreased mortality. Each year, more burned children are necessitating serious medical attention during their convalescence. For children with serious consequences resulting from burns that can persist from childhood through adolescence into adulthood, the value of long-term rehabilitation cannot be over stated. Burn injury management should not focus only on the immediate treatment. Long-term functional outcome and the required rehabilitation that burn victims must go through should be given equal if not more attention. The present is a review of the available modalities utilized for the physical rehabilitation of convalescent pediatric burns in order to overcome the catabolic state, improve muscle power and fitness, reduce disfiguring scars and prevent contractures
