    James Bond: international man of gastronomy

    This article is concerned with the representation of food and drink in Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. In particular, it examines how the author uses Bond’s culinary knowledge and habits of consumption as an important constituent of his hero’s character. Similarly, the food choices of other characters, notably villains, are shown to be linked, by Fleming, to core aspects of their identity − principally their ethnicity. Bond’s impulse to observe and classify, very much in evidence in the novels’ food sequences, is examined in terms of the texts’ construction of Bond as a skilled identifier of signs

    Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are useful for understanding the health needs and outcomes of the general public. We aim to develop a burn-specific metric-Adult Burn Outcome Questionnaire (ABOQ)-that is brief and can be administered electronically to all burn survivors over the age of 18. The 14-item ABOQ was developed from the already validated Young Adult Burn Outcome Questionnaire (YABOQ) long form. The ABOQ questionnaire, along with Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System-10 (PROMIS-10), was administered to 120 outpatient burn survivors at three hospitals. Clinical validity of the ABOQ was measured by testing associations between ABOQ items and burn size, the PROMIS-10 generic items and composite scales using correlational analysis including multivariate canonical analysis. Nine out of 14 ABOQ items were significantly correlated with burn size (correlations ranging from -0.25 to -0.46, P < .01). The canonical correlation between ABOQ and burn size was 0.68 (P = .0002). The overall canonical correlation between two instruments was also significant (P < .0001). At the item level, at least 25% of the variation in each of the five ABOQ items could be explained by PROMIS-10 items and composite scores, while six other items could only be accounted for by less than 15% of the variation. ABOQ short form assessment can be used to efficiently measure burn outcomes across a range of relevant clinical domains with credible validity. A large proportion of the variation in ABOQ scores was not accounted for by PROMIS-10, suggesting that ABOQ provided additional health-related information specifically for the burn population beyond the generic instrument.U48 DP000055/DP/NCCDPHP CDC HHSUnited States

    Inorganic polymer fiber composites for protection of structures

    The primary focus of this thesis is to demonstrate the suitability of an inorganic polymer composite for transportation structures. The three major themes are: field application, graffiti resistance, and evaluation of self-cleaning and de-pollution properties. Previous Studies have demonstrated the potential of the composite made of alumino-silicate polymer and carbon fibers for field applications. This thesis presents results of three field applications, evaluation of graffiti resistance including removal techniques and documentation for self-cleaning and de-pollution properties. For field application, pigment combinations were developed to match the colors of existing structures or to blend with the surrounding areas. Two field applications were done primarily by the author and the third one was completed with the help of daily laborers supplied by a contractor. In all three cases the applications were completed without encountering any technical problems. In the area of graffiti resistance, commercially available products are reviewed. After evaluation of various removal techniques the author recommends the use of citric-based cleaner with high pressure washer or high pressure water with baking soda. For self cleaning, both laboratory and filed tests were conducted. The results show that the coating effectively cleans organic pollutants and the results compare well with those reported for anatase Titanium Dioxide containing concrete and mortar. Performance in the field can be simulated in the laboratory by using UV lamps. The results of the de-pollution study also shows that the results are comparable to the results reported in the European PICADA study where they used concrete or concrete mortar containing Titanium Dioxide.     Ignition and burn in perturbed inertial confinement fusion hotspots

    This work explores how perturbations affect the performance of inertial confinement fusion hotspots through the inhibition of ignition and the effect on burn propagation post-ignition. To model this, a 3D Monte-Carlo charged particle transport module has been developed for the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code Chimera. The behaviour of the hotspot and the hotspot power balance in three alpha-heating regimes - self-heating, robust ignition and propagating burn - are explored in 1D through hydrodynamic scaling with capsule size and laser energy, demonstrating strong alpha-heating effects on the hydrodynamic evolution. The hotspot’s definition affects calculated hotspot parameters, particularly in weak alpha-heating regimes where the boundary between the hotspot and the shell is less well-defined. The impact of perturbations on the hotspot was explored using idealised spike and bubble perturbations. Less efficient PdV heating of the hotspot reduces the strength of the alpha-heating bootstrap. The spike significantly increased heat flow out of the hotspot from thermal conduction and alpha-heating; due to larger temperature gradients and surface area around the spike, and the closer proximity of cold, dense material to the primary fusion regions respectively. The bubble’s effect on the hotspot power losses was minimal, but re-expansion into the bubble reduced confinement and truncated burn. 3D implosions based on National Ignition Facility Highfoot and High-Density Carbon (HDC) designs were perturbed using short-wavelength multi-mode and long-wavelength radiation asymmetry perturbations and scaled with capsule size and laser energy. The multi-mode yield increased faster with scale factor due to more synchronous P dV compression producing higher temperatures, and therefore stronger alpha-heating bootstrapping. Significant yield degradation for the Highfoot design resulted in only modest improvements in yield from scaling, whereas the less degraded HDC design demonstrated non-linear yield scaling. Perturbed implosions in the propagating burn regime exhibited fire-polishing due to thermal conduction and alpha-heating, in addition to "aneurysm"-like loss of confinement.Open Acces
