REVIEW: Noted: Fix the system before it’s too late: Review of The Broken Estate: Journalism and Democracy in a Post-Truth World, by Mel Bunce
The Broken Estate: Journalism and Democracy in a Post-Truth World, by Mel Bunce. Wellington: Bridget Williams Books, 2019. 224 pages. ISBN 9780947518356
NEW ZEALAND has probably the worst television systems of any OECD nation, media ownership so concentrated that there is only one truly independent newspaper left, plummeting readership levels and almost insuperable economic challenges. And yet, as London-based New Zealand journalist-turned academic Mel Bunce observes, there has never been a time when the country most needed a functioning, independent media system that people could trust.
In this slim, but powerful volume, she outlines what is wrong with New Zealand’s media and ways that it might be fixed

FOI data used in Voice of America study
This dataset relates to a research project that explored the increased politicisation of the Voice of America (VOA) international news network during the period when a Trump appointee, Michael Pack, was the CEO of the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM). We analyse why and how VOA was captured by Trump allies, and the effects of this increased politicisation on the US-funded network and on democratic backsliding within the US more broadly.
The research analysed 15,000 pages of material, 12,000 pages of this consisted of private correspondence and internal documents released by USAGM in response to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. The deposited spreadsheet provides details on the nature and location of these archives, while the methodology document details how we combined analysis of FOI material with semi-structured interviews, the analysis of news and social media, and document analysis of contextual material, including government reports, court verdicts, and documentation released by the January 6 Committee. The dataset relates the academic monograph, titled: Wright, Kate, Scott, Martin, Bunce, Mel. Capturing News, Capturing Democracy: Trump and the Voice of America. (Accepted by Oxford University Press)

Remembering Mel Henriksen and (some of) his theorems
AbstractThe author selects theorems from three papers co-authored by Mel Henriksen, proves some of those, and offers some consequences and commentary. Also included are some comments, mathematical and social, on Mel Henriksen as a colleague, a co-author, and a forceful presence in the wider political and mathematical community

An integrated approach to the key parameters in methanol-to-olefins reaction catalyzed by MFI/MEL zeolite materials
Identification of the catalyst characteristics correlating with the key performance parameters including selectivity and stability is key to the rational catalyst design. Herein we focused on the identification of property-performance relationships in the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process by studying in detail the catalytic behaviour of MFI, MEL and their respective intergrowth zeolites. The detailed material characterization reveals that both the high production of propylene and butylenes and the large MeOH conversion capacity correlate with the enrichment of lattice Al sites in the channels of the pentasil structure as identified by 27Al MAS NMR and 3-methylpentane cracking results. The lack of correlation between MTO performance and other catalyst characteristics, such as crystal size, presence of external Brønsted acid sites and Al pairing suggests their less pronounced role in defining the propylene selectivity. Our analysis reveals that catalyst deactivation is rather complex and is strongly affected by the enrichment of lattice Al in the intersections, the overall Al-content, and crystal size. The intergrowth of MFI and MEL phases accelerates the catalyst deactivation rate.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.ChemE/Inorganic Systems EngineeringChemE/Catalysis EngineeringChemE/Algemee

Mel Calman on Oil
James Baker analyses an apparently simple cartoon by Mel Calman: a man watching a blank TV that weeps oil. Baker describes the context in which Calman tells an economic story, with a few minimalist pencil traces, the artist provides..
