Paul G. Federbush review of Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, with note from Bryce S. DeWitt to Hugh Everett
After the DeWitt-Graham anthology The Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics appeared, it received some attention in scientific journals. This document is a copy of a review of the collection by Paul Federbush, which Bryce S. DeWitt sent to Hugh Everett III with his handwritten comments. The review was originally published in Science: Federbush, Paul G. (1974) "Philosophical Problems." Science, 183 (4130), 1189-1190.This document was found in the basement of Mark Everett in 2007 by Mark Everett and Peter Byrne
Microlensing of circumstellar envelopes: II. emission lines from radial and azimuthal flow during fold caustic crossings
This paper examines the line profile evolution due to bulk motion in circumstellar envelopes during microlensing fold caustic crossing events. These events have recently been shown to be a sensitive probe of stellar surface brightness profiles, thus providing a means - through both photometric and spectroscopic observations - to constrain and test stellar atmosphere models. Here it is demonstrated, through the examination of simplified line profiles, that spectroscopic studies of fold caustic crossings could also prove to be a powerful diagnostic of bulk motion in circumstellar envelopes
Letter re: American Airways Fort Worth Airport
Letter from William Bryce, mayor of Fort Worth, to W. R. Ely, The State of Texas Highway Department, regarding widening of Highway No. 2
Revaluations, III: James Bryce, “The American Commonwealth”
Had Bryce died on his fiftieth birthday, 10 May 1888, he would have been known as the author of The Holy Roman Empire, as a distinguished Regius Professor of Civil Law and as a respectable but undistinguished Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. The record would have been impressive enough but the content of achievement would have been orthodox – such as might be paralleled by many an academic liberal, British or European. Within a few months, however, Bryce broke into a new field and established a reputation of quite another order, with the appearance in December of The American Commortwealth, The book was more than a notable study of American institutions; it marked the recognition by a European mind of the first order of the importance and interest of the government, politics and manner of life of the contemporary United States. Tocqueville had paid such a tribute, a half-century earlier, but his example had not been followed up. Moreover, penetrating as his study was, as an analysis and a prophecy, one element was lacking in his tribute – observation.</jats:p

VI. Lord Bryce and the First World War
James Bryce considered that 1914 would be a satisfying year. He had just been created a viscount and, at the age of seventy-six, could look back on a career of distinction in university life, politics and diplomacy. He could continue to write books and indulge in correspondence with his friends. In fact, the books were not written and his correspondence became very practical. The tension in Europe in the summer of 1914 caused many people to ask him for advice on the best course of action. What, in particular, were Liberals to do? Some M.P.s were talking of peace demonstrations to keep Britain out of European war, but Bryce hesitated. On the evening of 31 July, the matter was discussed with J. A. Spender who noted that ‘… Bryce … strongly advised not to join this demonstration. He agreed that violation of Belgium would be casus belli.’ When Belgium was violated, Bryce was committed to the war but his commitment was reluctant, hesitant and with foreboding. The consequences of his decision are the subject of this article.</jats:p

Astronomical Tourism: An often Overlooked Sustainable Tourism Segment
Astronomical tourism is a potential attraction for visitors to destination areas where dark skies free from artificial light pollution can be enjoyed. This situation presents an opportunity for locations with specific product offerings such as astronomical observatories, (Robson, 2005; Weaver, 2011), auroral displays (Weaver, 2011), national/state/local parks, amateur astronomy organizations that offer public programs, and miscellaneous other providers. The focus here is on parks that have both dark skies and an organized astronomy program. The purpose of this research is two-fold: 1) to provide background research on necessary elements for astronomical tourism and 2) to examine the potential for this sustainable tourism segment to enhance the offerings to visitors at various types of natural parks, as exemplified by the astronomy program at Bryce Canyon National Park (BCNP). Where successful, these programs can enhance the overall visitor experience as well as the experience for visitors specifically interested in astronomy and improve the habitat for wildlife in the area
