Christopher (Robin) Milne as a sylleptic character. Relationship between reality and fiction in A.A. Milne’s children’s literature

    No full text
Alan Alexander Milne jest znany przede wszystkim jako autor czterech książek dla dzieci – dwóch tomików wierszy, When We Were Very Young (1924) i Now We Are Six (1927), a także dwóch zbiorów opowiadań, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) i The House at Pooh Corner (1928). I to właśnie Christopherowi (Robinowi) poświęcony zostaje niniejszy artykuł – postaci, którą proponuję nazywać postacią sylleptyczną. Zbadane tu zostają związki rzeczywistości i fikcji, to, jakie wydarzenia z życia stanowiły inspirację dzieł literackich, ale i to, jak dzieła te wpłynęły na losy pisarza i jego syna.Alan Alexander Milne is known primarily as an author of four books for children – two volumes of poetry, When We Were Very Young (1924) and Now We Are Six (1927), and also two collections of stories, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). In each of these works appears a character inspired by the writer’s son, Christopher Robin Milne. In Great Britain and the United States shortly after the release the poems commanded a lot of interest and fame was won primarily by Christopher Robin. As the writer said himself after years: “[…] it was Christopher Robin, not I, whom Americans were clamouring to see; and, in fact (to make due acknowledgement at last), it was Christopher Robin, not I, not the publishers, who was selling the book in such large and ridiculous quantities”. And it is to Christopher (Robin) that this article is devoted – the character I propose to call a sylleptic character. It examines the relationship between reality and fiction, what events from life inspired the literary works, but also how these works influenced the life of the writer and his son

    Inflation Targeting: The British Experience

This lecture describes the United Kingdom's experience with inflation targeting. It provides a historical perspective to the introduction of inflation targeting, discusses the concept of inflation targets, and compares an inflation targeting regime with money supply and exchange rate targeting regimes. It is noteworthy that inflation targeting is based on the assumption that low inflation is the proper objective of monetary policy. A significant portion of the lecture covers the issue of the measurement of inflation. It discusses whether asset prices should be taken into account in the inflation measure and looks in particular at the experience of Japan in the late 1980s. It also considers sources of imperfection in traditional measures. It concludes that monetary policy will have to be conducted by reference to estimated price indexes that fall short of the conceptual ideal but does not regard this as seriously undermining an inflation targeting regime. The lecture goes on to discuss the issues of (1) having a target band for inflation or not, (2) the difficulty in forecasting inflation, and (3) the time horizon over which monetary policy should aim. The lecture highlights the important role that openness and transparency play in achieving credibility in monetary policy. It highlights the five devices that are now in use in the United Kingdom, and notes some of the benefits emerging from the open and transparent nature of the United Kingdom approach. It concludes by warning that inflation targeting does not promise to make monetary policy easy but does have the positive virtue of directing attention to many technical issues that need to be resolved in conducting monetary policy.Inflation, Targeting, British

Theology in suspense : how the detective fiction of P.D. James provokes theological thought

Electronic redacted version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holderThe following dissertation argues that the detective fiction of P.D. James provokes her readers to think theologically. I present evidence from the body of James’s work, including her detective fiction that features the Detective Adam Dalgliesh, as well as her other novels, autobiography, and non-fiction work. I also present a brief history of detective fiction. This history provides the reader with a better understanding of how P.D James is influenced by the detective genre as well as how she stands apart from the genre’s traditions. This dissertation relies on an interview that I conducted with P.D. James in November, 2008. During the interview, I asked James how Christianity has influenced her detective fiction and her responses greatly contribute to this dissertation. However, James’s novels should be interpreted and explored in the manner that they are received by the reader. How the reader receives and responds to the novels, not only how James writes the novels, is what causes her stories to provoke theological thinking. By examining Christian symbolism that is present in setting, character, the Detective Adam Dalgliesh, and plot, this dissertation seeks to assert that James contributes to a theological conversation through her popular detective fiction

The role of music and musicians in current English parish church worship : the attitudes of clergy and organists.

One of the many issues currently confronting the Church of England is the role of music in worship. It is not a new debate, but has been brought into sharper focus in recent years in the wake of liturgical change. After examining the fundamental issues of the debate, the author considers them in the context of the present day. Other current matters of concern will also be discussed. The effects of liturgical change are then considered. The discussion is then widened to include: - a review of current hymnals and psalters; - a survey of the courses and qualifications in church music available in Great Britain; - three case studies demonstrating the problems that can arise when clergy and church musicians are in conflict; - a review of surveys in church music undertaken since 1950. The main work comprises a detailed survey by questionnaire to the priest-in-charge and organist at almost half the churches in a large diocese (that of Oxford). This yields an overall picture of: - respondents' personal backgrounds and general attitudes; - respondents' perceptions, both objective and subjective, of the situation at their church, and of each other. From these varied strands are drawn certain conclusions for improving clergy-organist relationships, and suggestions for further research in the subject

The safety and effectiveness of different methods of ear wax removal: a systematic review and economic evaluation

    No full text
Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural secretion produced to protect the inner ear from dirt and other fragments by moving these particles towards the outer ear. If this process does not happen properly, wax may build up causing blockage in the ear canal and the possibility of impaction. People with a build up of ear wax may suffer from hearing loss, discomfort and, on occasions, infection. It may present problems in assessing hearing, blocking the view of the ear drum during medical examination and interfering with the fitting or function of hearing aids. Although it is thought to affect between 2% and 6% of the population in the England and Wales, some groups may be at a higher risk, such as those using hearing aids or with small ear canals and/or skin conditions. Recurrence is thought to be high among some of these groups. The consequences of the build up of ear wax in the ear canal are thought to be a common reason for consultation and cost in general practice with over 2 million consultations per year in the NHS.Methods of removal of ear wax include drops, flushing with water in general practice, and removal with suction or probes in specialist clinics. The relative safety and benefits of these different methods of removal remains uncertain. This research will systematically review published and unpublished evidence on the clinical and cost effectiveness of different methods for the removal of ear wax. Where appropriate, it will develop an economic model using data from this systematic review and other relevant sources to estimate the relative costs and benefits of different methods. In addition, the project will provide recommendations for future research to try to help answer any remaining areas of uncertainty

Individual versus group success in round robin tournament of an ability-based two-player game

This thesis studies the development of cooperation and measures of success among self-interested agents in a defined ability-based two-player asymmetric game that is structured as a round-robin tournament. Our research is motivated by the notion that in many systems cooperative behaviour depends on some parameters that are usually not considered in existing research. These include: the balance between individual activity and interaction with others; the impact of agents' ability levels; and the need to maintain balance between individual and group performance. In this thesis, we examine all these issues by using a defined game-theoretic modelling and simulation framework. Our simulation experiments on six agent group compositions establish some patterns of how an agent's ability and strategy impact its individual and overall group performance. The results demonstrate that the design framework supports methodical comparative studies of strategy profiles with respect to specific individual and group performance measures.cooperative behaviourtwo-player asymmetric gametheoretic modelling and simulation framewor
