L'islam immaginato. Rappresentazioni e stereotipi nei media italiani

    No full text
In recent years, Islam and Muslims are very significant in public debate, because of issues linked to international politics (Islamist terrorism, military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, etc..), and because of the radicalization of some positions in western countries about the challenges of cultural integration of immigrants (many of whom come from states with a Muslim majority). This salience in public discourse is accompanied by a widespread (and acknowledged, at least in the scientific literature) process of distortion of Islam, operated especially by mass-media. The book reconstructs the mechanisms of representation of Islam within the Italian media scenario, connecting: 1. general and theoretical considerations; 2. aspects shown in scientific literature; 3. empirical evidence derived from research activities carried out by the author. This empirical section, investigating and quantifying the representation of Islam in the Italian media, has allowed to isolate the main "stereotyped forms", analyzing and highlighting the most important and those of longer duration. Finally, the book emphasizes the predominantly "visual" dimension of stereotypes; through an analysis of icons and images of Islam in his “mediated” version, it’s showed the capability of media system to create and reinforce stereotypical representations of Islam

The issue of confrontation with an "Otherness" defined in terms of identity and religious and cultural diversity is a constant in the current European scenario. This is important for subjects related to international relations and, more specifically, to the debate about the characteristics of "multicultural" areas in European cities. In particular, Islam is the main theme that illuminates the “political struggle”, evoked when western societies face of this cultural universe, often perceived as 'foreign'. Islam in european cities is very significant also in relation to the central question of recognition and visibility in public spaces: the recent legislative action about chador in France, or the issue of minarets in Switzerland are interesting examples in this matter. There is no doubt that the presence in Europe of about 15 million people who can be defined as "Muslims" (for religious or cultural background) does not refer only to a future to come, but about the present and the realities of European societies. This collection of essays explores several problematic issues in this "intercultural" confrontation, focusing primarily on representative and symbolic dimensions of this vision to the “otherness”, in which the media play a role that is certainly central

The “Issue of Mosques” in Italy: Mass Media, Public Opinion and Political Actors

The public image of the immigrants who came in Italy from Muslim countries is often flawed by bias and stereotypes that relegate these people, even the more distant from religious belief and practices (which might be called secularized), in an "Islamic" identity, perceived as a monolith driven by fanaticism and intolerance. The mainstream medias contribute to the construction of these distorted representations by framing, emphasizing some issues related to otherness, and organizing the different positions of the various actors involved in the semiosphere. As shown by recent cases in several European countries (eg Switzerland and the outcome of a specific referendum), the conflict on building of mosques is configured as a crucial problematic node to examine the reactions of host societies to the visibility of Islam in the public arena and their representations in the information flow. The degree and forms of “resistance” to this visibility in urban space depend, among other things, on the level of acceptance of Islam in the local and national context (as well as on the characteristics of the Muslim settlement): in this respect, the Italian situation seems to be particularly peculiar for several reasons. In this paper will be analysed the debates and conflicts involving the places where mosques are built, concerning the mosques as visible symbols of the Islamic presence in Italy, directly related to the perception of Islam as “the typical Other”, examining in particular the role played by media imagery and communication processes (including those voluntarily activated by the political and cultural actors involved). The analysis of different case studies, conducted on various kinds of texts (tv news, newspapers, online discussions) and through a mix of quantitative and qualitative research methods (content analysis, lexical-textual analysis and discourse analysis), will highlight the main coordinates of the debate, the role of different actors involved, the images and characterizations of Islam and, in general, of people with different cultural backgrounds which emerge from the media coverage of these conflicts, putting them in socio-political Italian context, even to outline its main peculiarities

Lampedusa/Italia.

This contribution aims to explore and deconstruct the mechanisms of representation and news-media construction of the so-called “landing emergence”, as a highly significant frame and as a very important issue, mainly with regard to its iconic value, within the wider image of migration in Italy. In particular, the focus is on the events connected to the so-called “Arab Spring” and, therefore, with the arrivals on the Italian coast (particularly in Lampedusa) in February-April 2011. Through the mass-media discourse analysis – mostly carried out with non-standard methods, referred to frame analysis and critical discourse analysis – can be analyzed the representative patterns of the “arrival issue” in mainstream media, the journalistic construction of the image of immigrants and refugees, the definition (also in terms of labelling) of the migration as a “social problem”. Particular emphasis is directed to the dimension of the “quantitative description” of landings, what can be named as a “TV politics of numbers”, functional to the definition of an interpretative key based on the alarm and to justify the adoption of specific policies on reception of immigrants

Media representations of immigrants in Italy. Framing real and symbolic borders

The “need” to build walls and barriers, restore boundaries, restraining “waves” of refugees and migrants, appears one of the most urgent priorities involving European countries. In Italian media and political debate this theme has been very important in last years also regard a peculiar kind of border, the maritime one, for the centrality acquired by Lampedusa and other coasts, also as symbolic space of construction of relationship with the “Other”. On the other hand, the media defined also “symbolic internal borders”, by focusing on certain themes or images of migrations. The contribution aims to explore and deconstruct the main mechanisms of representation and news-media construction of immigrant image in Italy. Through frame analysis (mostly carried out with qualitative and non-standard methods) will be enlightened three main discursive dimensions: a) the so-called “landing emergency” (as external border); b) the central interest on crime news where immigrants are protagonists, and c) the cultural-religious dimension of immigration (both as internal border)
