Approximation through suffixation:-ḍḍu/-a in Sicilian
This article investigates the use of the Sicilian suffix -ḍḍu/-afor the expression of ap-proximation. On the basis of a survey of a corpus of ethnotexts and the outputs of a translation questionnaire, we propose that approximation is a core value in the semantic network of the suffix, expressing a certain distance fromthe default values conveyed by the base. In terms of prototypi-cality, this distance may occur from the categorial centre (internal approximation): the suffix mod-ifies the semantics of the base but does not alter the categorial status of the referent. Alternatively, the suffix may impact on categorial membership tout court (external approximation), questioning the categorial properties of the base. Based on this classification, the semantic cores of the suffix are represented in a map showing the connections between the various meanings identified in the corpus
A Cognitive-Pragmatic Description of Evaluative Suffixes in Latin Letters: The Case of -llus
This paper aims to analyse the behaviour of the Latin suffix -llus in a
corpus of letters from the classical and early post-classical periods in the light of the
synchronic and diachronic polysemy model developed within cognitive linguistics
and the morpho-pragmatic approach to diminutives. It is proposed that approximation
is a central value in the semantic network of the suffix, which expresses a
certain distance from the default values conveyed by the base. This distance may
occur from the categorial centre (internal approximation), in which case the suffix
modifies the semantics of the base but does not alter the categorial status of the
referent. Alternatively, the suffix may impact categorial membership tout court
(external approximation), throwing into question the categorial properties of the
base. We here propose a semantic map to represent these semantic cores and the
way they radiate towards other meanings that constitute the polysemous network
of the suffix
Reversive constructions in Latin: the case of re- (and dis-)
This paper proposes a cognitive account on re- and dis- verbs based on the scrutiny of the Plautine corpus and Cato’s De agricultura. Re- and dis- exhibit significant differences as to the manner in which they come to a reversive function, and these differences can be traced back to the basic conceptual import of the two prefixes: while dis- is schematically connected with the idea of separation into two parts, re- basically refers to a rearward/reditive trajectory, connecting a point that has already been reached to the starting point. On the basis of this description, I analyze the semantic network of re- and dis- and the role of their conceptual structure in the spread from spatial to reversive values
ПОСЕСИВНОСТА И ВОЛИТИВНОСТА ВО РАЗВОЈОТ НА МОДАЛНИТЕ ЗНАЧЕЊА: СТУДИЈА НА СЛУЧАЈ ОД СИЦИЛИЈАНСКИОТ ДИЈАЛЕКТ
This article analyses two Sicilian modal constructions involving vuliri \u27want\u27+ infinitive and aviri a ‘have to’+ infinitive. They are used to express modal values, both non-epistemicand epistemic, and futurity. Based on Langacker\u27s Cognitive Gram-marassumptions, we describe the semantic network associated with each modal, as well as their semantic overlap. In addition, we describe how modal values interact with temporal-aspectual inflection. Our analysis shows that the epistemic values of vuliriare quite peripheral, while aviri ashows a high degree of polysemy, both in the non-epistemic and in the more abstract epistemic domain. The non-epistemic-to-epistemic shifts depend on the contextual coordinates: basically, on the actionality of the verb, and on the agentivity of the Trajector, therefore on the feature of Inten-tionality which has proved to be crucial in the processes here analysed. On the whole, aviri a exhibits a higher degree of grammaticalisation compared to vuliri: while the latter maintains its “verbiness”, the former appears to be a stable means of modal expression interacting with the other contextual coordinates in a rather complex way.
In this essay we intend to provide a description of the semantic network of cum + ablative within the phase of Latin attested in the comedies of Plautus (between the 3rd and 2nd century BC). The preposition cum in Latin occurs in a number of functions, both semantic and grammatical, that have been addressed in traditional lexicons, grammars and studies, as well as in functionalist and typological linguistic literature. What is lacking in this panorama is an analysis of the behaviour of the preposition which, starting from the principles of embodiment and cognitive grammar, investigates its semantic network and attempts to motivate its polysemy and to analyse the semantic roles it helps to express
Le costruzioni condizionali coordinate in italiano contemporaneo
Ci proponiamo di analizzare un gruppo di costruzioni che veicolano una semantica condizionale di tipo predittivo pur essendo codif cate come strutture di tipo non
subordinato
Drawing the Comitative Area: The Semantic Network of co(-m/-n/-r/-l)-/cum in Plautus
We describe the semantic network of the preposition cum and the preverb co(-m/-n/-r/-l)-, based on the survey of Plautus’ corpus conducted on the Library of Latin Texts Online (LLT-A). Although preposition and preverb have individually received considerable attention, neither their relationship nor that between the various senses included in their respective semantic networks have ever been systematically addressed. On the basis of Cognitive Grammar, we will propose that preverb and preposition share a basic semantics, here referred to as the “CUM-relation”, which accounts for the entire set of concrete (e.g., comitative) and non-concrete (e.g., intensive) meanings they express. However, cum and co(-m/-n/-r/-l)- instantiate the CUM-relation differently and different mechanisms are involved in the development of their semantic continua. This analysis allows us to trace the semantic maps of preposition and preverb at a specific stage of the language and highlight the areas where they converge or diverge
Punti fermi e divagazioni nell’analisi dell’espressione linguistica del movimento e della maniera
The article takes stock of the main issues concerning the studies on the linguistic coding of space, movement and manner and introduces the papers in the volume
Semantica dello spazio, del movimento e della maniera
Il volume riunisce una serie di lavori condotti all'interno dei più aggiornati approcci teorici sulla semantica dello spazio del movimento e della maniera. Oltre a focalizzare e a porre in una nuova luce le questioni tradizionali relative al verbo, il volume esplora la possibilità che a veicolare la semantica spaziale o quella della maniera siano anche strutture nominali
