A Preliminary Study of a Conformal Electromagnetic Metasurface for Brain Tumor Detection
We introduce a radiofrequency system for brain tumor detection, where a conformal metasurface is employed, by opportunely modifying the classical planar structure. The proposed system, working at 3 MHz, consists in a 5×5 matrix whose unit-cells are made of 8-turn spirals, excited by an active RF coil placed in its near-field region. The detection of the tumors is carried out by observing the amplitude variation and the frequency shift of the driving coil input impedance. By performing accurate full-wave simulations, we demonstrated that, by designing the metasurface in order to produce a 5-spot magnetic field distribution, it is possible to detect and spatially identify brain tumor malignancies, despite the extremely low frequency herein adopted. The findings, obtained from accurate numerical simulations, suggest that the conformal near-field focused metasurface is able to detect inclusions as small as 1 mm, demonstrating excellent sensitivity and spatial resolution. Future studies and developments will be aimed at exploiting a real-time reconfigurability to sequentially scan the tissue or region of interest
Existence and nonexistence of positive radial solutions of a quasilinear Dirichlet problem with diffusion
In this paper existence and nonexistence results of positive radial solutions
of a Dirichlet -Laplacian problem with different weights and a diffusion
term inside the divergence of the form , with
and , positive functions satisfying natural growth
conditions, are proved. Precisely, we obtain a new critical exponent
, which extends the one relative to case with no
diffusion and it divides existence from nonexistence of positive radial
solutions. The results are obtained via several tools such as a suitable
modification of the celebrated blow up technique, Liouville type theorems, a
fixed point theorem and a Poho\v zaev-Pucci-Serrin type identity
Apoptotic-induced Effects of Castanea sativa Bark Extract in Human SH-SY5Y Neuroblastoma Cells
Castanea sativa Mill. wood extract (ENC) has health-promoting qualities such as antibacterial, antiviral, antispasmodic, cardio- and neuroprotective-activities. Its potential towards cancer cells of the central nervous system, however, is still unexplored. This study investigates the apoptotic-enhancing effect of ENC in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line. This extract irreversibly decreased cell viability with IC50 of 142.8 +/- 20.2, 109.3 +/- 16.6 and 82.5 +/- 8.6 mu/mL for 24h, 48 and 72h of treatment, respectively. This was accompanied by cell shrinkage and tendency to round-up. A concentration-dependent increase in sub GO/GI cells as well as a rise in cells with nuclear fragmentation and chromatin condensation, both typical of apoptosis, was also observed. In conclusion, the present findings provide initial data on the potential of ENC for neuroblastoma treatment and offer the rationale for further studies aimed at elucidating the full mechanism(s) underlying its effects
