Oral history interview with Bert Briscoe

Bert Briscoe grew up near Edmond, Oklahoma and attended Central State College in Edmond before coming to OSU for veterinary school. After he graduated in May of 1957, he began working for the USDA on July 1. Two weeks into the job, he was sent to the Vinita area to assist with the anthrax eradication. His initial job there was to vaccinate animals, including cattle, horses, sheep, and swine, and he covered areas in Oklahoma such as Welch, Centralia, Lenapah, and Bluejacket. Soon thereafter, his focus moved to diagnostics. His primary responsibility as a diagnostician was to collect samples from deceased animals and send those samples to OSU. In the time he spent working on the eradication, he witnessed not only anthrax, but also multiple cases of leptosporosis and anaplasmosis. Briscoe assisted on this project for its duration, approximately four months, and spent over thirty years in the study of diseases. However, to this day, he holds on to several unanswered questions regarding the anthrax outbreak
