Transcript for lunchable learning 25: Better together partners in learning
Monday May 2nd Lunchable Learning hosts Leva Lee and Helena Prins are back together for a special extended 60 minute program! Tune-in at noon as they welcome guests Steven Bishop and Shannon Cox from Douglas College to kick-off the conference “Better Together: Partners in Learning”.
“Better Together” is a college-wide themed week of learning, collaborating, and sharing. It’s a first for Douglas College and expresses the desire to rekindle a sense of community and common mission after two years of physical distance and isolation.
Programming includes keynote speakers, interactive workshops, panel sessions, radio shows and more. While the conference is an offering for Douglas College faculty, staff and administrators, the themes discussed will certainly be of interest to everyone in the post-secondary sector and a few select sessions are open for those who wished to register, based on availability. See the conference program here: https://facilitatingfacultyonline.opened.ca/2022/03/25/better-together-partners-in-learning/
Learn how the “Better Together” conference came to be, how it is a result of a huge collaborative effort between many groups and what organizers’ hopes and highlights will be for the week. Tune-in as we celebrate with song the affirmation that we are all indeed “Better Together”. #LunchableLearning #ds106radi
Schizophrenia is a serious psychological disease with mental disorder and loss of reality. The disease affects the whole life situation for the individual. The aim with this literature review was to describe how it is to live with schizophrenia. The method that is used is literature studies which means that a collection of different patients´ stories, three biographies written by people who themselves have experienced schizophrenia have been analysed but also a novel written by an author who was in close relation with a schizophrenic patient. These materials have been analysed according to Lyckhage´s model for analysing stories. Eight categories have emerged in the result giving utterance to: To live in an alien and evil world, suicide, relation to the nursing staff, family and relatives, self-concept, experiencing anxiety attacks, and inner voices and hallucinations
Ethical procedures and patient consent differ in Europe.
BACKGROUND
Research ethics approvals, procedures and requirements for institutional research ethics committees vary considerably by country and by type of organisation.
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the requirements and procedures of research ethics committees, details of patient information and informed consent based on a multicentre European trial.
DESIGN
Survey of European hospitals participating in the prospective observational study on chronic postsurgical pain (euCPSP) using electronic questionnaires.
SETTING
Twenty-four hospitals in 11 European countries.
PARTICIPANTS
From the 24 hospitals, 23 local investigators responded; 23 answers were analysed.
OUTCOME MEASURES
Comparison of research ethics procedures and committee requirements from the perspective of clinical researchers. Comparison of the institutions' procedures regarding patient information and consent. Description of further details such as costs and the duration of the approval process.
RESULTS
The approval process lasted from less than 2 weeks up to more than 2 months with financial fees varying between 0 and 575 &OV0556;. In 20 hospitals, a patient information sheet of variable length (half page up to two pages) was provided. Requirements for patients' informed consent differed. Written informed consent was mandatory at 12, oral at 10 and no form of consent at one hospital. Details such as enough time for consideration, possibility for withdrawal and risks/benefits of participation were provided in 25 to 30% of the institutions.
CONCLUSION
There is a considerable variation in the administrative requirements for approval procedures by research ethics committees in Europe. This results in variation of the extent of information and consent procedures for the patients involved.

Librarians and OER: Cultivating a community of practice to be more effective advocates
As the costs of scholarly and educational publications skyrocket, open educational resources (OER) are becoming an important way to provide content and enhance the teaching and learning experience. Librarians have a key role to play in developing, advocating, and managing OER. For many librarians, however, championing OERs means adding an additional responsibility to their already heavy workloads, which may be overwhelming. This article describes how a grassroots group of academic librarians in British Columbia, Canada joined together as a community of practice to learn and to share ideas, strategies, and tools to support the use of OER. The BCOER Librarians focus on the education and professional development of librarians to help facilitate the use and development of OERs and to create authoritative and sustainable resources to support librarians in OER-related interactions with faculty.Peer reviewedReview articleFinal article publishedOE
Surgical treatment of toraco-abdominal teratoma diagnosed in utero, approached with mini-invasive technique: A case report
Thoracic tumours of childhood arise either in the mediastinum, or from the chest wall and rarely from the lung parenchyma. Mediastinal teratoma occur in the anterior mediastinum and are usually very large at presentation; initial treatment is under discussion, but it appears that surgical excision and histological examination are the treatments of choice and it will determine whether the lesion is benign or malignant. The authors report a case of thoracic-abdominal teratoma, diagnosed in utero, and treated successfully with thoracoscopy and laparoscopy. No complication was described in short follow up, and the child was discharged in day 8 th postoperative day. Histology showed mature teratoma. Follow-up at one year: no evidence of recurrence. Due to the rarity of multifocal teratoma in newborns, author believe that mini-invasive technique was useful to stage histological the mass, giving the opportunity to plans a second stage in treatment of the patient. Day of hospitalization resulted shorter in both surgical approaches, and discomfort less for the thoracic approach. This staging must be anyway planned, in the way of prenatal counselling and in the perinatal period, with the team involved in the procedure, that include anaesthetists, oncology staff, obstetricians, neonatologists and pediatric surgeons. It is mandatory in cases like the one reported that a multisciplinary team manage the patients and expert surgeons, especially in minimal invasive surgery, make the adequate plans

This dissertation aims to carry out an analysis of the connection between writing
and travel as illustrated by the walking journal, Leva-me contigo: Portugal a pé
pela Estrada Nacional 2, by Afonso Reis Cabral, a volume collecting the texts
the author posted on Facebook during the journey he made on foot along the
739 kilometers of the National Road 2, the longest in Portugal. Focusing on its
circumstances, itinerary, and geographical and human landscapes, we have also
highlighted the conventional and innovative elements of Cabral's narrative and
its indebtedness to travel literature tradition. In addition, the structural innovations
brought into the travelogue genre by digital technologies and social media,
conspicuously present in Cabral's narrative, will be emphasized.Mestrado em Português Língua Estrangeira/Língua Segund
