The use of intuition in homeopathic clinical decision making: an interpretative phenomenological study

    No full text
While intuition plays a role in clinical decision making within conventional medicine, little is understood about its use in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate intuition from the perspective of homeopathic practitioners; its’ manifestation, how it was recognized, its origins and when it was used within daily clinical practice. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with clinically experienced non-National Health Service (NHS) UK homeopathic practitioners. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the data. Homeopaths reported many similarities with conventional medical practitioner regarding the nature, perceived origin and manifestation of their intuitions in clinical practice. Intuition was used in two key aspects of the consultation: (i) to enhance the practitioner–patient relationship, these were generally trusted; and (ii) intuitions relating to the prescribing decision. Homeopaths were cautious about these latter intuitions, testing any intuitive thoughts through deductive reasoning before accepting them. Their reluctance is not surprising given the consequences for patient care, but we propose this also reflects homeopaths’ sensitivity to the academic and medical mistrust of both homeopathy and intuition. This study is the first to explore the use of intuition in decision making in any form of complementary medicine. The similarities with conventional practitioners may provide confidence in validating intuition as a legitimate part of the decision making process for these specific practitioners. Further work is needed to elucidate if these findings reflect intuitive use in clinical practice of other CAM practitioners in both private and NHS (i.e. time limited) setting

Analysis in reciprocal space of the band-pass filter effect in uniform and non-uniform grating couplers

    No full text
A detailed study on the origin of the bandwidth reduction in the CouplingEfficiency (CE) spectrum for non-uniform grating couplers (nu-GCs) due to a band-pass filter effect is reported. This effect is deeply investigated through Finite Difference Time Domain simulations (FDTD) in order to look at the spatial Fourier Transform (sFT) of the nu-GC's emission, which gives the energies and the wavevectors sustained by the overall structure. We show: how to evaluate the bandwidth from the sFT and how the band-pass filter effect arises from the sFT affecting the CE spectrum giving a physical insight on the bandwidth's reduction. Moreover, we also point out how the concept of photonic crystal bandstructure can be applied for such nu-GCs and used as a powerful tool to describe the dispersion of the light inside these non periodic structures. Finally, both the sFT and the bandstructure approaches are shown to give the same outcomes in terms of the bandwidth evaluation and to be in agreement with the CE spectra's behaviours. The entire analysis is proposed also for uniform-GC in order to directly compare the two different types of structures

Wavelength selection in focusing non-uniform grating couplers: a coupling efficiency curve asymmetry and bandwidth analysis

    No full text
We report a combined experimental and computational investigation of the multi-wavelength response of a series of focusing non-uniform grating couplers designed on multiple SOI thicknesses interfaced with two different fiber coupling schemes. In particular, we demonstrate either the existence of an asymmetry of the coupling efficiency curve shape, with respect to the tuning wavelength (1550 nm), related to the metastructure features, and how the photonic band structure of such metastructures can be calculated and exploited to evaluate their multiwavelength response, in terms of multi-BW analysis. These results can be a positive stimulus for a further comprehension of the electromagnetic response of non-uniform grating couplers, particularly interesting as a valid option for integrated photonics applications

    Portrait of Nelly O`Brien

    On the Threshold: Conceptual Speculation

    No full text
This chapter is based on an interview Donna Lee Brien and Kiera Lindsey conducted with Ffion Murphy, who reflects on the life of Australian composer and music critic James Penberthy, AM, and her long involvement with both his story and that of his third wife Kira Bousloff, a former member of the famous Ballet Russes. Artist and organiser, mentor and collaborator, Penberthy's contribution extends beyond his numerous and diverse compositions. He co-founded significant and enduring cultural organisations, including West Australian Ballet and West Australian Opera, and was a determined promoter of Australian music during decades when European artists and composers dominated Australian concert halls, theatres and airwaves, including the programs of the national Australian Broadcasting Corporation (known as the Australian Broadcasting Commission for much of Penberthy's career). The prospective biographer would seek to render elements of Penberthy's personal life alongside cultural transformations he witnessed, participated in and helped to create during several decades of the twentieth century. Coining the term 'conceptual speculation', the chapter speculates on avenues for exploration, and some challenges, including reservations about an outsider to the art form attempting a musician's biography
