    MULTICOMPONENT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROGRAM: STUDY WITH FALLER AND NON-FALLER OLDER ADULTS

    ABSTRACT Falls are considered a public health problem and physical activity is an effective strategy to prevent fall. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of a physical activity program on physical fitness, fear of falling and quality of life in groups of faller and non-faller older adults. Study was conducted with participants of a multicomponent program of physical activity at a university in Brazil. The participants were assigned to: faller (n=25) and non-faller (n=133) groups. Participants were assessed using the Senior Fitness Test, Falls Efficacy Scale-International Brasil and The Medical Outcomes Study 36. Mean, standard deviation, Student “t” test and effect size were conducted. There was a difference between faller and non-faller individuals at LLFLEX (p=0,05), LLS (p=0,04), BA (p=0,03), FES (p=0,00), SF36 (p=0,00). The group of non-faller elderly people improved physical fitness. The pre test of the faller group showed increased fear of falling in comparison to the non-faller group. The physical activity program did not influence fear of falling in any of the groups. The quality of life showed better results in the non-faller group, with variation in some aspects between groups and over time. Elderly people with a previous history of falls need a differentiated physical program.</div

    In his article The Father\u27s Power in Breitbach\u27s Report on Bruno and Achebe\u27s A Man of the People Amechi N. Akwanya analyses Joseph Breitbach\u27s Report on Bruno and Chinua Achebe\u27s No Longer at Ease in order to lay bare the underlying processes of these texts. Undoubtedly the patterns of struggle in the two texts are political, but reading them in exclusively political terms has the consequence that the works are of no further interest once the putative political agenda is identified and described. Akwanya\u27s analysis discloses shared features in the two texts published within two years of each other. In Report on Bruno, there is a democratic system, where the people have their say but in A Man of the People they are kept in the dark about what is really going on and are manipulated and abused by those in power. Their resemblance is at the level of symbolism and this is what Akwanya attempts to unlock using René Girard\u27s theory of mimetic desire

    Sit-to-walk performance in Parkinson's disease: A comparison between faller and non-faller patients

    Background: Falls are one of the main concerns in people with Parkinson's disease, leading to poor quality of life and increased mortality. The sit-to-walk movement is the most frequent postural transition task during daily life and is highly demanding in terms of balance maintenance and muscular strength. Methods: With the aim of identifying biomechanical variables of high risk of falling, we investigated the sit-to-walk task performed by 9 Parkinson's disease patients with at least one fall episode in the six months preceding this study, 15 Parkinson's disease patients without previous falls, and 20 healthy controls. Motor performance was evaluated with an optoelectronic system and two dynamometric force plates after overnight suspension of all dopaminergic drugs and one hour after consumption of a standard dose of levodopa/benserazide. Findings: Poor trunk movements critically influenced the execution of the sit-to-walk movement in patients with a history of falling. The peak velocity of the trunk in the anterior-posterior direction discriminated faller from non-faller patients, with high specificity and sensitivity in both the medication-off and -on state. Interpretation: Our results confirm the difficulties in merging consecutive motor tasks in patients with Parkinson's disease. Trunk movements during the sit-to-walk can provide valuable measurements to monitor and possibly predict the risk of falling

    N-containing pollutant formation in pyrrole counterflow diffusion flames

    Biomass conversion through direct combustion (energy production) or pyrolysis (bio-oil production) are novel concepts to reduce CO2 emission in the energy sector. However, the nitrogen content in biomass feedstocks may result in elevated N-containing pollutants, e.g., NOx, NH3, HCN, and nitriles, yet their formation chemistry remains unclear. In this work, we studied N-containing pollutant formation in counterflow diffusion flames fuelled by pyrrole, a biomass tar surrogate component that accounts for the majority of fuel nitrogen. 27 species, including 8 N-containing species, were identified and measured in three flames with designed boundary conditions to reveal the influence of flame temperature and methane addition. Species mole fraction comparisons showed that methane addition and higher flame temperature promoted C2–C6 hydrocarbon formation, but mole fractions of N-containing species did not change much, reflecting less dependence on flame temperature or hydrocarbons in the species pool. An existing kinetic model for pyrrole pyrolysis and combustion was developed by updating the formation reactions of N-containing species based on recent literature studies. Numerical simulations using the kinetic model well reproduced mole fractions of most species except for NO and NO2. Model analyses illustrated the nitrogen conversion pathways from pyrrole to individual N-containing pollutant species, and indicated the possible reactions for underestimated mole fractions of NO and NO2. This work contributes to a better understanding of the combustion properties of N-containing fuels and N-containing pollutants in the context of biomass energy clean utilization
