Convergence in the Agricultural Incomes: a Comparison between the US and EU

    No full text
In this paper we compare the changes in farm incomes in EU regions and US States between1989 and 2002. The aim of this comparative analysis is highlight the patterns of convergence or divergence and how they differ over time. We use two recent analytical instruments: non-stationary panel analysis and dynamic distribution analysis. Both tools overcome the problems involved in using standard cross-section analysis. The results of the non-stationary panel analysis show that the EU regions are converging, and that family farm income is converging faster than net added value. In the US states the analysis shows that substantial differences in farm income persist, and there are no evident signs of convergence. While, the regions are heterogeneous, we modified the analysis to allow for the concept of conditional convergence. The results show that the regions converge towards different levels of productivity but regions that are further from their steady-state level will grow faster.Agricultural Finance,

Body image patterns, self awareness and physical growth. Preliminary notes. Argnani L.1, Ventrella A.R.1, Toselli S.1, Brasili P.1 1Department of Evolutionary Experimental Biology-Unit of Anthropology-University of Bologna, Italy A close connection between distorted body image perception and some nutritional disorders as anorexia nervosa, bulimia and obesity is fully documented (Guarino et al., 2005; McCabe et al., 2005). Overtaking this distorted perception could be an important step in the care and/or prevention of those disorders. Our purpose is to provide to children objective anthropometric indications on body dimensions for helping them to modify their self perception. For this aim we considered 464 children aged 6-11 years of North Italy (Bologna) measured in 2006 in the context of a wider semi-longitudinal study on children for assessing the variability of growth and the nutritional status. For this report, to supply an objective complete somatic profile of the subject, body mass index (kg/m2) and somatotype (Heath-Carter, 1967) were considered. Students’ self-reported Perceived Actual and Ideal self figure using Collins’ (1991) pictorial instrument scale of seven children body images were analysed, taking also into account trends with sex and age. The relation of children’s body characteristics with self body image perception and with the ideas which parents have of their children is investigated too. Methodology of silhouettes chart application is also discussed. In this study results show that children begin to develop gender based stereotypes of attractiveness early in life, but do not present particular body image distortion. Few parents of children with nutritional problems seem to be aware of the situation of their children, especially in the case of underweight subjects. These are preliminary notes of a research that could answering to the typical call for longitudinal study, to value the tracking of one’s own image perception over time

EMILIA-ROMAGNA IN THE TIME OF THE CRISIS: THE INDICATOR OF REGIONAL ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND THE SPECIALISATION OF PRODUCTION AND TRADE

    No full text
This paper aims at providing some evidence of the short-term and long-term changes occurred in the Italian regional economies following the economic downturn. Our analysis will combine the use of structural and coincident indicators to describe the specialization of the region Emilia Romagna and its economic performance during the crisis. We adopt the Indicator of the Regional Economic Activity – IREA (Brasili, Benni 2006) to proxy the regional business cycle and give a timely picture of its economic performance till September 2010. The IRAE overcomes the deficit of the regional GDP – which is released with considerable delays by the national statistical authorities – by using a set of timely and high-frequency variables that tend to move in concert with the GDP. For our assessment of the regional specialization, we will proceed to the reconstruction of a pre-crisis scenario of specialization, using a set of structural indexes. Then, we will study the conjunctural changes occurred in the main sectors of specialization. We will complement our analysis by studying the evolution of the trade specialization through the index of “relative comparative advantages†(Lafay 1992). In the final section, we will compare the specialization models of Emilia-Romagna, Toscana and Lombardia and discuss their vulnerability to disruptive shocks in the short and long term.

Potentiation and inhibition ofnicotinic effects on striated muscle by the tetramlne disulfide benextramineB. G. Benfey, L. Brasili, C. Melchiorre, B. Belleau

ln low concentratiuns the tetramlne disulfide benextramine potentiated the contracture of the isolated frog rectus abdominus muscle caused by acethilcholine but in presence of physiostigmine or in presence of higher concentration only inhibited the contracture by carbachol or butirrilcholine. The all-carbon analog of benextramine only inhibit the the effect of acetilcholine. The inhibitori effect of benextramine and it all-carbon analog were noncompèotitiveand ready reversible but the potentiating effect of benextramine was not readly reversible

MOLECULAR REQUIREMENTS OF THE ACTIVE SITESOF THE CHOLINERGIC RECEPTORSXII (*) - 3-Methyl-2-oxo-L-dimethylaminomethylcyclopentane methiodideas a new selective agonist for the nicotinic receptorM. GIANNELLA, P. ANGELI, C. MELCHIORRE, L. BRASILI

To investigate further the nature of the active sites olcholinergic reeptors the carbocyclic analogs of isomuscarone and isomuscarine were synthesized- and tested for their cholinergicactivity.Like isomuscarines, such compounds are completely devoid of muscarinic activity which further support the hypothesis that the receptor site, corresponding to position 2 of the ring, cannot accept groups larger than and/or with a dipole having a different direction from that of an etheroxygen.on the other hand nicotinic activity is quite good. In this respectcompound (IV) is particulary interesting, being as actiie as ACh and pratically devoid of muscarinic aciivity

The results of the no.stationary panel analysis show that EU regions are converging, and that family farm income per hectare is converging faster than net added value. In the US States the analysis shows that substantial differences in farm income persist, and there are no evident signs of convergence. In brief, there were more changes in farm income in the EU between 1999 and 2002 than in the USA

    Fallot's tetralogy and squatting position

The paper presents the case of a 1-year-old girl with severe respiratory distress, perioral cyanosis and severe desaturation (SpO2 35% with oxygen in nasal prongs). An echocardiogram was readily performed showing the distinctive features of Fallot’s tetralogy. The child was placed in a squatting position (knee-chest position). Subcutaneous morphine at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg, bolus of physiological solution in 30 minutes and therapy with oral propanolol were administered, with progressive clinical improvement. Subsequently, corrective cardiac surgery was performed with regular postoperative period and following good clinical conditions. Cardiogenic causes must be considered among the causes of respiratory distress especially in low resource countries where congenital heart disease can be misdiagnosed or diagnosed belatedly
