Attracting and retraining talent: lessons for Scottish policy makers from the experiences of scottish expatriates in Dublin

No full text
With a view to contributing research of value to the Fresh Talent Scotland Initiative, this research project has been devised with specific reference to the first of the three goals noted above. Specifically, it is concerned with gaining insights into why talented individuals leave Scotland in the first instance, and thereafter to ascertain whether anything might be done to both stem the outflow and lure back to Scotland some of its most talented diasporeans. Such a goal in turn begets, it will be argued, greater insights into the actual experiences of contemporary diasporeans in the run up to migration and whilst in exile. Using one emerging magnet for Scottish expatriates as a case study, the Republic of Ireland and more specifically Dublin, the project seeks to examine the embroilment of skilled Scottish expatriates in the so called Celtic Tiger phenomenon. The basic purpose of this report is to present insights into the decision making processes that have led migrants to leave Scotland and to move to Dublin, to gain an appreciation of what life has been like for expatriates living in Dublin and what Scotland might learn from these experiences, and finally to review future locational preferences with a view to establishing whether a return to Scotland may be a possibility

The mainstream primary classroom as a language-learning environment for children with severe and persistent language impairment - implications of recent language intervention research

No full text
Many UK children with severe and persistent language impairment (SLI) attend local mainstream schools. Although this should provide an excellent language-learning environment, opportunities may be limited by difficulties in sustaining time-consuming, child-specific learning activities; restricted co-professional working, and the complex classroom environment. Two language intervention studies in mainstream Scottish primary schools showed children with SLI receiving intervention from speech and language therapists (SLTs) or their assistants made more progress in expressive language than similar children receiving intervention from education staff. Potential reasons for this difference are sought in the amount of tailored language-learning activity undertaken; how actively school staff initiated contact with SLTs; and the language demands of the classroom. Tailored language learning appears to be a differentiating factor. A language support model, reflecting views of teachers and SLTs about encouraging language development for children with SLI within the ecology of the mainstream primary classroom, is also outlined

Boyle's Law

This interactive presentation, created by Terry Bartelt and hosted by the Electromechanical Digital Library, discusses the history and theory of Boyle's Law. The presentation offers two different variations of the concept. The first involves "a change in pressure exerted on a given quantity of gas causing an inverse effect on its volume." The second simply flips this first variation and shows how the change in quantity affects the pressure. The presentation is filled with helpful, and interactive, flash animations. This is not only anesthetically pleasing, but also helps the student engage with the topic. Once both variations are complete, a short quiz is provided to test the full understanding of Boyle's Law

Kay Boyle a study of the short fiction

No full text
Chronicler of our times, and one of the premier writers of the modern short story, Kay Boyle has been both popularly and critically acclaimed for most of this century. Winner of the O. Henry Memorial Award and recipient of AMA Guggenheim fellowships, she is perhaps best known for works like The Crazy Hunter: Three Short Novels (1940) and The Smoking Mountain: Story of Postwar Germany (1951). Her writing focuses on the human aspects behind great political movements; she uses firsthand knowledge of major events in this century to give her tales an agreeable freshness and authorityElizabeth S. Bell has traced the many developments in Boyle's innovative style, her shifting concerns with national and international political issues, and her dexterous use of personal experience. The relationship between the author and her peers in modern fiction receives careful examination, as do her many contributions to the genre. Bell's personal contact with Boyle has led to a remarkably perceptive study, which incudes a previously unpublished interview with the author and excerpts from other unpublished works. Well-chosen selections from the comments of various critics provide many different vantage points from which to study Boyle. Kay Boyle: A Study of the Short Fiction is one of the few book-length studies of the writer. It will be a welcome addition to any librar
