Correspondence regarding Horace Kephart collection
This copy of a 1934 correspondence, from W. E. Bird to J. Ross Eakin, concerns the Horace Kephart collection. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was a noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. William Ernest Bird (1890-1975) with Western Carolina Teachers College would become president of the college in the 1950s. J. Ross Eakin (1879-1946) was the first superintendent of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, holding that post from 1931 until 1945
Influence of hosts on the ecology of arboviral transmission: Potential mechanisms influencing dengue, Murray Valley encephalitis, and Ross River virus in Australia
Ecological interactions are fundamental to the transmission of infectious disease. Arboviruses are particularly elegant examples, where rich arrays of mechanisms influence transmission between vectors and hosts. Research on host contributions to the ecology of arboviral diseases has been undertaken within multiple subdisciplines, but significant gaps in knowledge remain and multidisciplinary approaches are needed. Through our multidisciplinary review of the literature we have identified five broad areas where hosts may influence the ecology of arboviral transmission: host immunity; cross-protective immunity and antibody-dependent enhancement; host abundance; host diversity; and pathogen spillover and dispersal. Herein we discuss the known and theoretical roles of hosts within these topics and then apply this knowledge to three epidemiologically important mosquito-borne arboviruses that occur in Australia: dengue virus (DENV), Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV), and Ross River virus (RRV). We argue that the underlying mechanisms by which hosts influence arboviral activity are numerous and attempts to delineate these mechanisms further are needed. Investigations that focus on hosts of vector-borne diseases are likely to be rewarding, particularly where the ecology of vectors is relatively well understood. From an applied perspective, enhanced knowledge of host influences upon vector-borne disease transmission is likely to enable better management of disease burden. Finally, we suggest a framework that may be useful to identify and determine host contributions to the ecology of arboviruses
Web 2.0: Hypertext by Any Other Name?
Web 2.0 is the popular name of a new generation of Web applications, sites and companies that emphasis openness, community and interaction. Examples include technologies such as Blogs and Wikis, and sites such as Flickr. In this paper we compare these next generation tools to the aspirations of the early Hypertext pioneers to see if their aims have finally been realized
Recovery theorem: expounded and applied
Includes bibliographical references. This dissertation is concerned with Ross' (2011) Recovery Theorem. It is generally held that a forward-looking probability distribution is unobtainable from derivative prices, because the market's risk-preferences are conceptually inextricable from the implied real-world distribution. Ross' result recovers this distribution without making the strong preference assumptions assumed necessary under the conventional paradigm. This dissertation aims to give the reader a thorough understanding of Ross Recovery, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. This starts with a formal delineation of the model and proof of the central result, motivated by the informal nature of Ross' working paper. This dissertation relaxes one of Ross' assumptions and arrives at the equivalent conclusion. This is followed by a critique of the model and assumptions. An a priori discussion only goes so far, but potentially problematic assumptions are identified, chief amongst which being time additive preferences of a representative agent. Attention is then turned to practical application of the theorem. The author identifies a number of obstacles to applying the result { some of which are somewhat atypical and have not been directly addressed in the literature { and suggests potential solutions. A salient obstacle is calibrating a state price matrix. This leads to an implementation of Ross Recovery on the FTSE/JSE Top40. The suggested approach is found to be workable, though certainly not the final word on the matter. A testing framework for the model is discussed and the dissertation is concluded with a consideration of the findings and the theorem's applicability
Moving forward after death: an adaptation of Kubler-Ross' five stages of grief with a biblical understanding at St. Mary United Methodist church Hogansville, Georgia, 2007
The issue of death and dying, despite its inevitableness, may be one of the most complex phenomena within the context of ministry. This paper addresses how mourning persons may move beyond grief through an adaptation of Kubler-Ross Five Stages of Grief paradigm while examining the construct of death and dying from a biblical and theological perspective. Kubler-Ross five stages provide the framework from which a model was designed to help empower grieving members of St. Mary United Methodist Church to overcome the loss of loved ones. The purpose of the model was to develop a mechanism that could be replicated in the church that equips congregants to cope with grief and move on to productive, spiritually whole lives

New York Times’ Ross Douthat on the State of American Politics
This week’s guest is Ross Douthat, opinion columnist for the New York Times and author of several books on various topics including religion, American Decadence, and his experience with chronic Lyme Disease.
In this conversation, we cover the change of conservatism and economic interests over the past few decades, and how Trumpism affected the interests of bi-partisan politics. Ross will be joining the University of Montana community as a President’s Lecture Series speaker on march 2. He talk is titled “How Reaganism Became Trumpism” and we’re exited today to get a preview of that talk and explore some of Ross’s other areas of expertise and interest.https://scholarworks.umt.edu/anewangle_podcasts/1231/thumbnail.jp
The cemented total hip
Cemented total hip replacement is becoming less popular, particularly on the acetabular side. This is in spite of the fact that in most countries with registries the results of cemented hips are outperforming those of cement less hips. The difference is particular profound in older patients and on the femoral rather than the acetabular side. The author contends that a capable orthopedic surgeon should be able to perform a well cemented total hip replacement. There are a number of steps that add 5– 10 minutes to the operation, but these are not technically difficult. In fact, the author maintains that it is easier to perform a cemented total hip replacement than an uncemented total hip replacement. The steps are logical; component positioning is easy and the subsequent revision, if ever required, is a straight forward procedure. In conclusion, the author believes that cemented total hip replacement is an excellent option in all age groups. There is no evidence in the literature in registry series to counteract this assumption. The procedure does stay slightly longer, but the steps are logical and relatively straight forward. The intermediate and long-term results are excellent, and revision of a failed cemented hip is a straightforward procedure
