Regional income inequality in Egypt: Evolution and implications for Sustainable Development Goal 10
Get PDFResearch on income inequality in developing economies has scarcely looked at the regional dimension. This is important, as progress in reducing income inequality at national level can only be partially successful if a country consists of very unequal regions alongside relatively equal ones. Using newly assembled Luxembourg Income Study data, we study the evolution of income inequality within Egyptian regions during 1999–2015. The analysis offers three findings. First, income inequality has generally increased. Second, regional differences in income inequality tended to decrease, but less unequal regions are converging to similar levels of inequality of more unequal regions. Third, there has been a decrease in the income share of the bottom 40% and an increase in the proportion of people living below 50% of median income. Hence, geographically dif- fused progress on the first two targets of SDG 10 depends on reversing these trends
A Modular Logic Approach for Expressing Web Services in XML Applying Dynamic Rules in XML

It allows the enrichment of web ontologies by adding definitions of derived concepts and it enhances interoperability among different systems and tools by publishing rules in an XML format. Moreover the in-creasing demand for interfaces that enhance information sharing has given rise to XML doc-uments that include embedded calls to web services. In this paper we propose a variation of RuleML that is based on modular logic programming. Our approach is based in a two level architecture. In the first level a modular logic language, called M-log, is presented. This lan-guage encompasses several mechanisms for invoking web services. In the second level we ex-ploit the semantics of M-log to present a variation of RuleML with rich modeling capabilities. German Macroeconomic Thought and its Effects
No full textWe first ask whether there is something different about the macroeconomic thinking that prevails in Germany, which leads the German government to argue for different policies from those which many other policy-makers and economists put forward. We give a qualified positive answer to this question, and then consider the distinctive attitudes held by the German government and/or central bank with respect to the process of monetary integration in Europe and then to the Eurozone crisis. We argue that German opposition to the use of expansionary fiscal policy and of unconventional monetary policy has made a major contribution to the failure to deal appropriately with the Greek crisis or to bring about a strong recovery in the Eurozone

Spillovers and productivity: Revisiting the puzzle with EU firm level data
No full textWe revisit the puzzle of FDI spillovers on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) of domestic firms using evidence from six EU countries. Previous literature fails to uncover knowledge spillovers from MNEs operating in the same industry (horizontal) and upstream industries (forward) as it neglects the role of geographical proximity in the case of horizontal spillovers and the role of direct ties between domestic and foreign firms as well as the scope of product differentiation of domestic firm in the case of forward spillovers. The present paper incorporates these new aspects in the identification of horizontal and forward spillovers and shows that economic gains from the presence of MNEs in the domestic economy can be collectively close to 6.1%. Our findings provide one of the missing links highlighted in the meta-analysis of Havranek and Irsova, (2011) and reinstate the importance of FDI as a source of productivity enhancement for local firms. From a policy perspective, our results reheat the debate about appropriate policies that increase MNEs\u27embeddedness within the local economy
