    No full text
It is imperative that we train leaders who are able to intervene efficiently with service users and to support a better organization of the workplace. It is especially important to look at the many issues related to postsecondary training and human resources, such as recruiting and keeping these leading professionals. Accessibility and Active Offer thus combines theory and empirical data to help future professionals understand the workplace issues of accessibility and active offer of minority-language services. This English-language adaptation of Accessibilité et offre active features an additional chapter by Richard Bourhis on issues specific to Anglophone communities in Québec. This multidisciplinary collective work is the first to unite researchers in health, social work, sociology, political science, public administration, law and education, in order to gain more thorough knowledge of linguistic issues in health and social services, as well as of active offer of French-language services.Liste of Figures and Tables (ix) ● Abbreviations (xiii) ● Introduction: Social Services and Health Services in Minority-Language Communities: Towards an Understanding of the Actors, the System, and the Levers of Action Marie Drolet, Pier Bouchard, Jacinthe Savard, and Solange van Kemenade (1) ● PART I. A New Design for the Scheveningen Pier

    No full text
The current owners of the Scheveningen Pier are starting to head into the second phase of their exploitation plan, which is to replace the current pier. This new pier is larger than the current pier and can exploit at a higher level. This thesis creates a design for a new Scheveningen Pier. A design method is used, which combines the engineering design method and the spatial design method. This combined design method consists of two design loops. One design loop for the complete design and the functional / spatial design and one design loop for the technical aspects of the design. These technical aspects are the morphology, hydrodynamics and the structural mechanics. In the end of this thesis, a total integrated design has been made. This design accomplishes the goal of this thesis and suffices the requirements and scores good on the criteria. However, to get to a fully functional and realisable design, more detail needs to be added to the design and the calculations. Some design steps should also be revised because new information is gathered over the course of this thesis. The design method used in this thesis is functional, but a more effective design method is given in the end. These changes are based on the experiences gathered in this thesis.Civil Engineering | Hydraulic Engineering | Hydraulic Structures and Flood Ris

Investigation of Scouring Mechanism around a Circular Pier

    No full text
In the present study, the flow field around a circular pier is investigated with experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The transient flow patterns during erosion are studied in detail. The results show that the traditional equations of particle motion are not perfect for the calculation of the sand motion under this complex flow situation. The scouring agents, such as turbulent intensity, the fluctuating pressure and the vertical pressure gradient, having many effects on the sand motion with the increasing scouring depth, need to be considered in modifying the traditional model. In the present study, the flow field around a circular pier is investigated with experimental measurements and numerical simulations. This video essay aims to explore some of the relationships between loneliness and La rabbia by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Inspired by the centenary of the birth of this Italian author and the various discussions sparked in Colombia during this celebration, this paper argues that this work is significant for contemporary videographic criticism. The goal is to emphasize how the notion of solitude presented in Pasolini’s work, and specifically in La rabbia, can foster the creation of various connections in Latin America. The important bond between the essay and loneliness in the region can lead to fruitful alliances with a videographic lineage originating from Pasolini’s work.

In the chapter titled "DisputIAmo. Sull’uso dei LLM per la didattica dell’argomentazione" by Pier Cesare Rivoltella, the author examines the potential and challenges of using Large Language Models (LLMs) to support argumentative skills in education. The chapter highlights how AI-driven conversational systems, such as ChatGPT and specialized debate assistants like Argubot and Argumate, can be used to train students in structured dispute and debate practices. Rivoltella critically analyzes the strengths and limitations of these tools, emphasizing their capacity to foster divergent thinking, enhance social presence, and support self-feedback through retrospective analysis. At the same time, he addresses significant issues, such as the risk of "authority bias" and the servile tendency of AI to align with the user’s stance, which undermines the potential for critical debate. The chapter also reflects on the importance of integrating AI into educational contexts while being aware of its limitations. Rivoltella proposes practical guidelines for leveraging LLMs in argumentative training, including promoting critical thinking, encouraging self-assessment, and using AI as a tool for developing linguistic and rhetorical competencies. Ultimately, the author advocates for a balanced approach that acknowledges both the pedagogical opportunities and the ethical challenges of integrating AI into educational practices

Large-Eddy Simulation of Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flow Around A Circular Pier

    No full text
In this article, the turbulent flow field and the scouring mechanism around a circular pier were numerically investigated using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method for three scouring holes. The effects of the bottom topographies on the flow structure were studied in detail. The results show that at the downstream of the pier, as the scouring depth increases, the bed shear stress decreases and approaches to the undisturbed shear stress, however, the turbulent intensity, the fluctuating pressure, and the vertical pressure gradient increase gradually

La conversazione artificiale. Per una Post-media Education

    No full text
In "La conversazione artificiale", Pier Cesare Rivoltella explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on human communication and social interaction. The essay addresses how AI-driven conversational agents, such as chatbots and virtual assistants, challenge traditional notions of dialogue, altering the dynamics of human interaction and communication practices. Rivoltella critically examines the ethical, educational, and social implications of artificial conversations, questioning whether these interactions can truly be considered conversations in a philosophical and pedagogical sense. Drawing from a philosophical and pedagogical perspective, the author discusses how artificial conversations differ from human dialogue, highlighting issues of authenticity, empathy, and reciprocity. The essay also reflects on the potential of artificial conversation to both enhance and impoverish educational contexts, depending on how it is integrated and perceived within learning environments. By situating artificial conversation within the broader context of postmedia society, Rivoltella advocates for a critical and reflective approach to the use of AI in education, emphasizing the importance of developing digital literacy and critical thinking skills to navigate the complexities of human-AI interaction. The essay ultimately calls for a balanced understanding of artificial conversation as both a technological innovation and a potential disruptor of human connection
