    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Euro area governance: What went wrong in the euro area? How to repair it? Bruegel Policy Contribution 2010/05, June 2010

    No full text
Bruegel Director Jean Pisani-Ferry focuses on the institutional response to the euro area crisis with the Van Rompuy Task Force being set up to reform economic governance. The task force is due to present its progress report shortly and the author examines two basic questions in this context– what went wrong in the euro area (and the lessons learnt from this) and consequently what are the three choices for reforming governance. He explains why implementation of existing rules need to be strengthened and why the Van Rompuy Task Force should revisit the fundamental principles on which the EMU is founded and resist the temptation to solely address divergences

Tranvías: entre el Ultraísmo y el Vibracionismo. (Barradas, Torres García, Nimero Salvat Papasseit)

In this article I discuss two examples of the encounter between streetcar and pedestriannd their use in artistic and literary works in the 1920s, in works by Andrés Nimero, Rafael Barradas, Joaquín Torres García and Joan Salvat-Papasseit. Under the Futurist impulse traveling by streetcar or the streetcar as an object was used as a metaphor for complex human situations, a usage that speaks to us of the powerful impact of public transportation on the human imagination once it became a conspicuous element of the urban landscape of Modernity. References to Italian, Russian, French texts and works of art. As Jean Starobinski explained, modern cities offered a whole range of situations and objects that can be used to express the impact of the new (streetcars, factories) and its coexistence with the old (churches, palaces). On many occasions this imagery, which mixes the past and the future, tends to present contradictory assessments of the present. The paintings and annotated texts show how artists and writers have tried to express the experience of the modern city, its spaces, the clash of simultaneity, the anonymity of public spaces
