No full textDie enge Verflechtung mit dem Weltgeschehen ist seit langer Zeit fester Bestandteil der Geschichte der modernen Schweiz. Auf politischer, kultureller und wirtschaftlicher Ebene waren die Grenzen stets äusserst durchlässig. Als «kleine, offene Wirtschaftsmacht» orientierte sich das Land bereits seit Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts stark am Welthandel und spezialisierte sich früh auf die Ausfuhr von Qualitätsprodukten mit hoher Gewinnmarge, wobei der Anteil des Aussenhandels an der nationalen Wirtschaft signifikant hoch war. Auch der schweizerische Finanzplatz positionierte sich spätestens nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg an der Weltspitze. Diese starke Ausrichtung auf die Weltmärkte brachte von Anfang an ein grosses Interesse der schweizerischen Eliten an diplomatischen und politischen Entwicklungen und Verschiebungen in den internationalen Beziehungen zwischen den Grossmächten mit sich. Die Neuorientierung der weltweiten Machtverhältnisse während der Epoche des Kalten Krieges – das heisst während der etwas mehr als vier Jahrzehnte, die zwischen der Verkündung der Truman-Doktrin 1947 und der Gründung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 1949 einerseits und der Auflösung des Ostblocks 1989/90 andererseits liegen – betraf deshalb die schweizerische Aussenpolitik und Wirtschaft in besonderem Masse. Die spätestens seit dem Kriegseintritt der (bislang neutralen) USA im Dezember 1941 unter massivem Druck stehende schweizerische Neutralität konnte sich mit der Entfaltung des Kalten Krieges auf dem bipolaren Schachbrett der beiden Machtblöcke neue Tätigkeitsfelder eröffnen, welche die schweizerische Innen- und Aussenpolitik in der Folge stark bestimmen sollten

Nach der Wirtschaftsgeschichte (1/2010), der Sozialgeschichte (1/2011) und der Kulturgeschichte (1/2012) wird die Reihe mit einem Heft zur Politikgeschichte (1/2013) abgeschlossen. In 14 Artikeln werden Themen aus dem Mittelalter, der Neuzeit, der Sattelzeit und der Zeitgeschichte aufgenommen. Die Beiträge bieten Forschungsüberblicke zur Geschichte der Parteien und der politischen Bewegungen, der Militärgeschichte, der Rechtsgeschichte, der staatsbürgerlichen Rechte und der Staatsbürgerschaft, den auswärtigen Beziehungen, der Neutralität, der schweizerischen Mitarbeit in internationalen Organisationen, des Service Publics, des Parlamentes und der Verfassung, der Religionsgeschichte und des Säkularismus, der Umwelt und zur Konstruktion von Geschichte und nationaler Indentität. Zusätzlich werden die beiden Arbeitsinstrumente Diplomatische Dokumente der Schweiz und das Jahrbuch Schweizerische Politik (L'Année politique suisse) vorgestellt und am Beispiel des Bergier-Berichts wird die politische Instrumentalisierung der Geschichte diskutiert.Après trois cahiers consacrés respectivement à l'histoire économique (2010), sociale (2011) et culturelle (2012), ce quatrième dossier clôt la série historiographique lancée par la rédaction de traverse afin de faire le point sur les perspectives de la recherche historique en Suisse. Afin d'aborder les multiples facettes de l'histoire politique, ce cahier rassemblera plus d'une quinzaine de contributions portant sur l'époque médiévale, moderne et contemporaine. No full textThe publication of Sandra Braman’s Change of State signals the importance of the topic of information policy to the field of information studies. It also illustrates both the power and necessity of the kind of inter-disciplinary analysis that characterizes the field. This panel will provide an opportunity for both structured debate and lively discussion around Change of State and the important arguments it contains. Perhaps the most important one that it makes is that “trends in information policy both manifest and trigger change in the nature of governance itself.” That is, Braman points to how information flows have radically altered the nature of the traditional nation-state and its ability to exercise power (or fails to, as the case may be).
Because of i-Schools’ strong connections with the professional world of information institutions, it is particularly important for graduates to understand the far-reaching implications of this argument. On a practical level, graduates need to become conversant with both the varied manifestations of information policy, and the mechanisms by which such policy is enacted. Change of State provides a highly useful synthesis of all the major debates in the field of information policy (including identity, immigration, innovation policy, etc.), organizing them into a comprehensive analytical framework, along with extensive bibliographic essays.
The format of this session will involve each speaker presenting a 15 minute paper which will discuss Change of State from their own disciplinary perspective. Prof. Braman will then respond to the papers. The presentations will be followed by a question and answer period with the audience. The goal is to offer both structured debate around key arguments presented in the book, while offering an opportunity for the audience to interact with the speakers.
