SOURCES FOR THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING OF SACRAL ARCHITECTURE IN THE REGION OF ARCHDEACONRY OF VRBOVEC (17 th – 19 th c.)
Zagorska Sela.In this article author delivers results of the investigation, based on the archival sources, about sacral architecture in the region of the Vrbovec archdeaconry in the period between the beginning of the seventeenth century and mid nineteenth century. This topic previously was only barely touched in the studies about history of arts in this region. During the in-vestigation author noted some completely new interpretations of the existing edifi ces (e.g. for the parish churches in Velika Erpenja and Sutlanska Poljana). Archival sources also can give us much information about renovations of the chapels and churches in the arch-deaconry, which cannot be seen in the present day constructions (e.g. the chapel in Bregi Kostelski). This investigation proved that it is necessary to consult archival sources during examination of the constructions and architecture of the old sacral edifi ces
The Age of Skin and the Epoch of an Author: A Eulogy to Dubravka Ugrešić
This text, the initial purpose of which was to review Dubravka Ugrešić’s latest book in English translation, the collection of essays The Age of Skin (2020), unexpectedly transformed into a synthetic writing on the literary and cultural relevance of this great feminist post-Yugoslav author, who passed away suddenly on 17 March 2023. The article analyses the main theses of the book and contextualizes them within Dubravka Ugrešić’s overall text corpus, emphasizing the importance of her essayistic authorial voice—a voice that articulates critical topics of our time, from poverty, exploitation, and violence, to migrations, everyday life mythologies, and popular culture, to melancholic recollections of a better past, together with a utopian future and the possibility of resistance, enabled also by the power and beauty of literature
Baroque in Croatia. Presentation of Baroque culture in Croatia in the socialist period
This article analyses examples of the way in which Baroque art and culture was presented to broader audiences in Croatia while that country still formed a part of Yugoslavia. Such examples include the Croatia in the Seventeenth Century exhibition, which took place in 1958 at the City of Zagreb Museum, as well as texts giving an overview of the monuments of a number of municipalities in north-western Croatia published in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Anđela Horvat (1911–1985) in the journal Kaj. The above-mentioned exhibition reflected many key ideas of the 1950s, which constituted the formative period of socialist society’s cultural and artistic identity, all the way from its design set-up and its educational purpose to its ideologically determined emphasis, which concentrated on the subject of daily life in the seventeenth century. By the 1980s this ideologically determined emphasis was less present, leaving much more space for the analysis of Baroque monuments, as well as of the people who commissioned them – the nobility – who, in contrast to earlier times, were then seen as active participants in cultural and art life of the Baroque period

Današnje čitanje teza Anđele Horvat. Arhitektura 17. stoljeća u kontinentalnoj Hrvatskoj između gotike i baroka
Anđela Horvat’s contribution to the study and understanding of Baroque art in inland Croatia is exceptional in many respects. Her book Between the Gothic and the Baroque (Između gotike i baroka), a detailed survey of art in inland Croatia from late 15th to late 17th century, published in 1975, drew attention to previously neglected artwork of the period and raised numerous questions, but also proposed the guidelines for future research. Anđela Horvat abandoned the traditional practice of describing the development of style, and, basing her studies on fi eld research, examined the plurality of stylistic features through the analysis of the coexistence of different currents, without imposing the categories of artistic value. The paper discusses some of her theses on the examples of Zagreb Cathedral and the parish church of St. Anastasia in Samobor. The methodology applied in Anđela Horvat’s research had no predecessors in Croatia, and it is especially revealing that many subjects covered in her studies have entered the sphere of art-historical research in Central Europe only some two decades ago.Izuzetan je doprinos Anđele Horvat poznavanju i istraživanju umjetnosti kontinentalne Hrvatske u razdoblju baroka. Knjigom Između gotike i baroka, iscrpnim pregledom umjetnosti od kraja 15. do kraja 17. stoljeća u kontinentalnoj Hrvatskoj, objavljenoj 1975., skrenula je pozornost struke na tu do tada zanemarenu građu i otvorila brojna pitanja i naznačila smjerove istraživanja. Napušta ustaljenu praksu prikaza razvoja stila, i uvidom u materijal istražuje pluralizam stilskih pojava, prateći paralelnu pojavu različitih strujanja, bez nametanja vrijednosnog kriterija.
COMMISSIONS OF JURAJ BRANJUGA »BISHOP BUILDER«: FOUNDATION AND FURNISHING OF THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. LADISLAUS IN POKUPSKO AND REFLECTIONS OF CULTURAL AND POLITICAL IDEAS AT THE END OF THE SEVENTEENTH AND THE BEGINNING OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY IN ZAGREB.
During the fi rst half of the eighteenth century Zagreb diocese entered the period of the extensive renovation and rebuilding of the ecclesiastical edifi ces, especially in the regions that were recently liberated from the Ottoman rule by the end of the seventeenth century. In these activities of revitalization of such desolated lands bishops of Zagreb had a very important role, since they were founders of the most new buildings in the regions on the south-east from Zagreb. Among them special place had bishop Juraj Branjug (1723–1748). One of his most important architectonic commissions was construction of the new parish church in Pokupsko. However, the new church, which was built in the period between 1736 and 1739, did not maintain its previous titular of St. Marta but after furnishing it was consecrated as parish church of St. Ladislaus. Detailed information about construction and equipment of the church is kept in the voluminous visitation of clergyman Stanislav
Pepelko from 1740. Architectonic construction of this church introduced for the fi rst time in the Croatian lands so called four-leaf form, which was followed by the usage of, so called, »Czech calotta (cap)« arch, and this type of construction later became quite often
in the late-baroque architecture in the region. Moreover, quality of this work – especially regarding the stucco decoration – suggests that artisans who worked on it probably were foreigners. Furthermore, beside this signifi cance for the history of art, one cannot omit the symbolic importance of this commission – since the church was entitled to the founder of Zagreb diocese: St. Ladislaus. Similarly, time of its construction was a period of expansion
and revitalization of diocese territory – in a way a time of »new beginnings«. By the same token, this commission is a kind of continuation of similar ordains in the Zagreb diocese from the end of the seventeenth century. Moreover, it is possible that these actions
were initiated also by the writing of Pavao Ritter Vitezović, who maintained Croatian provenience of St. Ladislaus in his study from 1703, and who suggested that Pokuplje could be his birthplace. As many other polyhistors of that time Vitezović tried to emphasize
importance and independence of the bishopric, what was a kind of extension of his political ideas delivered in Croatia rediviva. These ideas were quite infl uential among intellectual circles of that time within Zagreb diocese, and this can be confi rmed also three
decades later by the Branjug’s commission dedicated to his predecessor
