On the history of the first publications of Borys Grinchenko’s poems
For the first time, Borys Grinchenko’s poems were published in the Galician journal “Svit” (1881–1882) and the almanac “Rada” (1883, 1884). Some of them became programmatic and were therefore perceived as the works of a mature author. However, the poet expressed dissatisfaction with his first attempts at poetry. Besides, the poems underwent editorial interventions in these publications. Since there is no detailed biography of Borys Grinchenko, there is a need to reconstruct the creative history of these poems and conduct textological observations. For this, one should refer to the personal correspondence of Borys Grinchenko with Ivan Levytskyi (Nechuy), Mykhailo Starytskyi, Ivan Zozulya and other participants of the Ukrainian cultural movement of that time. Materials from the collections of the Institute of Manuscripts of V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine and corresponding printed materials were used for the textological comparison. On the basis of the conducted reconstruction, it is found that Borys Grinchenko did not have significant authorial control over the preparation of the first publications of his poems. He actually had no contact with the publishers of the Galician journal “Svit”, and had only fragmentary communication with the editors of the almanac “Rada”. Mykhailo Starytskyi’s active intervention in the texts of the works gave rise to a misunderstanding between him and the author. In addition, such actions of the initiator of the “Rada” almanac led to the existence of several editions of Borys Grinchenko’s individual poems, which differ significantly. At the same time, the history of Borys Grinchenko’s pseudonyms is connected with the first publications of poems. The article proposes an assumption about their sources and significance. The reconstructed relationship between Borys Grinchenko and leading figures of Ukrainian culture is important for understanding the history of subsequent publications of his works and individual sources of literary and critical polemics of the 1890s. The materials and observations proposed in the article will be included in the scientific biography of Borys Grinchenko, which is being prepared by specialists of the Department of Ukrainian Literature, Comparative Studies and Grinchenko Studies of Grinchenko University
ORDERED LIBERTY IN BORYS HUMENIUK’S TEXTS
This paper is concerned with the notion of ordered liberty and whether Borys Humeniuk promotes it in his texts. In order to determine it several issues are examined. First, the author establishes reasons for discussing this writer by describing Humeniuk’s personal and professional life; while also connecting the fact that Humeniuk acknowledges the importance of literature for shaping a society. Further, the author establishes the framework of the paper, as he discusses what freedom is in the philosophical tradition of the West and elaborates on the key idea of the paper — what the ordered liberty is and its origin. After an introduction of specific literary texts for the paper, the author moves to their discussion. This research includes a description of tiers of the society that is discerned in connection with personal responsibility and selflessness. Those tiers would be, firstly — members of the military who are ready to die for their country; secondly — everybody who in some way helps the military; thirdly — draft dodgers; and lastly — government officials, who are despised for being corrupt. This breakdown helps understand Humeniuk’s perception of ordered liberty, as it gives better understanding of his value system. Then using previous findings the author analyses three types of freedom found in Humeniuk’s texts. The first is freedom from life, as from war and suffering. Second, freedom that manifests in a public setting. It surfaces in a sentiment that everyone should work for the cause of defending the country. Third, deeply personal freedom, which can be seen in behavior when people tend only to their business; furthermore, they are rather cynical of all institutions and their ability to improve. Lastly, author makes a connection between Humeniuk’s sentiment about artists’ great impact on society and his emphasis on the latter type of freedom, showing the disconnection between the two ideas. The novelty of such research lies in bridging Ukrainian literature and the Western philosophic tradition, specifically on freedom and its facets. The further development of this research is analysis of Ukrainian literature through this lens as it helps to establish the attitude of Ukrainians towards freedom and if applied properly, helps to encompass policy makers in their work for the prosperity of Ukraine

Features of the linguistic portrait of Borys Grinchenko
The article attempts to outline the main features of the linguistic portrait of Borys Grinchenko as a prominent linguistic personality of the period of the formation of the modern Ukrainian nation. At the same time, the description (portrait) of the linguistic personality is not identified with the description of the language of the writer's literary works, but is drawn mainly on the basis of formal and informal communication through correspondence with friends and like-minded people. Research attention is concentrated on individual levels of the linguistic personality - lexical, morphological, word-formation. Special attention is paid to the orthographic features of the linguistic portrait, yet, this is a time in the history of the Ukrainian language when the formation of a single literary language and the search for spelling principles for it took place.
The material for the study was more than two hundred of Borys Grinchenko's egodocuments, dated 1883, 1884 and partly 1885 – the time of his work as a teacher in the Slobozhanshchyna. For their scientific understanding and complete study of the linguistic personality, the methodology of epistemology and linguopersonality was applied. This made it possible to represent a separate linguistic individuality in all its broader manifestations – temporal, spatial, evolutionary, cultural and aesthetic, social, linguocultural, etc.
The results of the study distinguish between linguoindividuation (Borys Grinchenko’s spontaneous need to be realized in and through language) and linguoindividualization (Borys Grinchenko’s conscious desire to acquire linguistic independence, cognizableness, and skill in operating linguistic means).
The conclusion postulates the idea that outstanding linguistic personalities establish linguistic priorities and produce linguistic values in the linguistic collective, and the linguistic personality of Borys Grinchenko can be compared in functional status with the personalities of Ivan Kotlyarevsky, Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko and other classic reformers of the Ukrainian-speaking space of our past
