Scared straight : boot camps for Queensland
The Liberal National Party (‘LNP’) ‘tough on youth crime’ policy mantra was well publicised in the months leading up to the 2012 Queensland state election. 1 Boot camp trials were espoused as a quick-fix panacea — a way of addressing youth offending. The idea was particularly favoured in the far northern regions of the state. In line with the new government’s policy, the Youth Justice (Boot Camp Orders) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2012 (Qld) (‘the Bill’) had a speedy passage through the unicameral Queensland parliament. It was introduced on 1 November 2012, scrutinised by the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee (‘LACSC’) which sought community feedback, and reported back to Parliament within the given timeframe of three weeks. The Bill received assent early December and the provisions commenced in January 2013.\ud

This article examines the legislative changes implemented in Queensland. It analyses the issues prompting the amendments such as the perception that parts of Queensland were in the grip of a ‘soaring juvenile crime rate’, the conservative government’s ‘tough stance’ policy towards youth offending, and the transfer of youth justice ‘solutions’ such as ‘boot camps’ among jurisdictions. The article assesses the evidence base for boot camp orders as an option in sentencing young offenders and concludes by raising serious concerns about pursuing such a narrow hardline approach to youth justice
Design and implementation of fpga-base boot loader
碩士本論文主要提出一個USB開機載入器(Boot Loader)與一個FPGA架構為基礎之雙Nios II處理器系統開機載入器的設計與實現。首先本文所用的FPGA實驗板為友晶公司的出的DE2-70開發板為實驗平台。此平台上具有一顆USB控制晶片,本文以U-Boot程式為基礎去撰寫程式並驅動FPGA實驗板上的USB裝置,最後順利從USB隨身碟內讀取事先做好的uCLinux核心映像檔程式,並成功在FPGA實驗板上將uCLinux作業系統開啟。透過此方法可節省每次燒錄FLASH記憶體的時間且增加FPGA實驗板上的FLASH記憶體使用壽命、且方便更新作業系統程式,達到多人共享開發平台等優點。另外本文在FPGA晶片內設計雙Nios II處理器系統設計架構,由實驗結果得知本文成功讓兩顆Nios II處理器分別開機載入執行各自程式,未來當機器人系統需要多處理器來控制時,便可用此方法來啟動多核心處理器系統。This paper proposed a boot loader design method based on U-Boot architecture to drive a USB FLASH disk and read an uClinux kernel to boot system. A DE2-70 FPGA board is used as an experimental platform. This platform has a USB controller chip. This paper discusses a way to write an application to drive the USB controller chip on the FPGA development board based on the U-Boot program. Then the application retrieves the uCLinux kernel image from the USB flash drive and boots up the uCLinux on the FPGA development board. Next, a uCLinux kernel image is read from the USB flash disk and completes the boot loader action. Via this way, some advantages can be obtained for saving the programming time of FLASH memory, increasing the life cycle of FLASH memory, updating operation system convenient and sharing development platform. Additionally, the paper designed a dual Nios II processor architecture in the FPGA chip. From the experimenal results, we know that this paper can make each Nios II processor run different program as it is booted. In the future, it can be utilized to boot multi-core systems for requests of multi-processors in the systems.目 錄

Gender and technology in the East Midlands boot and shoe industry : 1850-1911
Many scholars now consider that gender is an important category in historical study,
but unfortunately many do not practice what they preach. Feminists have recognised
for some time the importance of some form of historical analysis to feminism, or at
least what Judith Allen calls 'a historically grounded feminism'. The protagonists in
the debate disagree considerably, however, over the methodology which feminist
historians should adopt. The various positions taken up have led to a schism between
those who believe the feminist challenge to mainstream, or what Elizabeth Fox-
Genovese calls 'official' history, should be mounted from within the discipline of
history or from outside it. Judith Allen claims that the work which has been done in
women's history to date serves to raise considerable doubt that accepting the
discipline of history as presently constituted is a viable option for feminism. She sees
the phallocentric characteristics of history as an obstacle to feminists using history.
Allen feels that 'no less than Marxism, feminism is opposed by professional historians
as an ahistorical grid of abstraction and prescription, threatening the integrity of the
historical evidence.
Hybrid HPC – Establishing a Bi-Stable Dual Boot Cluster for Linux with OSCAR middleware and Windows HPC 2008 R2
The advent of open source software leading to Beowulf clusters has enabled small to medium sized Higher and Further education institutions to remove the “computational power” factor from research ventures. In an effort to catch up with leading Universities in the realm of research, many Universities are investing in small departmental HPC clusters to help with simulations, renders and calculations. These small HE/FE institutions have in the past benefited from cheaper software and operating system licenses. This raises the question as to which platform Linux of Windows should be implemented on the cluster. As the smaller/medium Universities move into research, many Linux based applications and code better suit their research needs, but the teaching base still keeps the department tied to Windows based applications. In such institutions, where it is usually recycled machines that are linked to form the clusters, it is not often feasible to setup more than one cluster.
This paper will propose a method to implement a Linux-Windows Hybrid HPC Cluster that seamlessly and automatically accepts and schedules jobs in both domains. Using Linux CentOS 5.4 with OSCAR 5.2 beta 2 middleware with Windows Server 2008 and Windows HPC 2008 R2 (beta) a bi-stable hybrid system has been deployed at the University of Huddersfield. This hybrid cluster is known as the Queensgate Cluster. The Scythe Statistical Library: An Open Source C++ Library for Statistical Computation
The Scythe Statistical Library is an open source C++ library for statistical computation. It includes a suite of matrix manipulation functions, a suite of pseudo-random number generators, and a suite of numerical optimization routines. Programs written using Scythe are generally much faster than those written in commonly used interpreted languages, such as R and \proglang{MATLAB}; and can be compiled on any system with the GNU GCC compiler (and perhaps with other C++ compilers). One of the primary design goals of the Scythe developers has been ease of use for non-expert C++ programmers. Ease of use is provided through three primary mechanisms: (1) operator and function over-loading, (2) numerous pre-fabricated utility functions, and (3) clear documentation and example programs. Additionally, Scythe is quite flexible and entirely extensible because the source code is available to all users under the GNU General Public License.
Plant traits, stoichiometry and microbes as drivers of decomposition in the rhizosphere in a temperate grassland
It is becoming increasingly clear that plant roots can impact the decomposition of existing soil C in the rhizosphere. Studies under controlled conditions suggest this impact may be plant species dependent, but whether this is the case in natural conditions or what factors underlie this variation is mostly unknown. With a novel field-based isotopic approach combining 13C-enriched glucose and 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine additions, we compared in situ C decomposition of added labile C and native soil C (priming) among eight semi-arid grassland species’ rhizospheres to investigate the factors driving inter-species variation. We examined the influence of several rhizosphere factors related to soil chemistry, microbial activity, microbial community, microbial stoichiometry, plant chemistry and root morphology. Plant species generated distinct microbial and chemical rhizosphere environments, which translated into differences in the direction, magnitude and temporal dynamics of the soil C priming. Soil C decomposition was positively related to soil C/P and soil N/P (via its influence on the bacterial community), which in turn were positively related to plant N/P. Plant C/N was also a significant factor via its negative influence on soil N/P. In contrast, the main direct predictors of labile C decomposition were microbial biomass, microbial C/N and the C-degrading enzymes, which in turn were linked to root morphology and C chemistry. Synthesis. Within this community, plant species’ rhizospheres can vary in their susceptibility to C loss in response to changes in C availability. Soil stoichiometry, driven by plant chemical traits, appeared to be the strongest driver of priming. Our study suggests that shifts in plant communities involving increases in N relative to P have the greatest potential to lead to C loss. We provide evidence of root morphology and C chemistry as drivers of labile C processing in soil, a novel empirical contribution to our understanding of the role of plant traits below-ground. The contrasting regulation of different pools of soil C suggests observations of the regulation of simple C compounds should not be extrapolated to the whole C pool. Our findings provide support for rhizosphere-driven mechanisms by which shifts in plant community composition could have implications on the ecosystem-level C balance
