Understanding the uncertainties and errors associated to the main LULC datasets is a required step to facilitate their correct use, as well as to identify what could be improved in the future production of these products. CORINE Land Cover is probably the most well-known and used LULC dataset in Europe, especially valuable for the rich time-series that it provides. Despite being produced through a change mapping first approach, which tries to avoid technical errors and uncertainties in the temporal analysis of LULC changes, the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service distributes status layers of CORINE (CSL), which are not valid for change analysis because of their associated errors and uncertainties. The CORINE layers of changes (CHA) remove a lot of these issues, but do not meet the needs of many users. In Portugal, the national authority in charge of producing CORINE, the DGT, has implemented a backdating approach to produce consistent CSL layers that allow change analysis with low levels of uncertainty. Throughout this paper, we evaluate the changes that can be analyzed through all available CORINE layers in Portugal: Copernicus CSL layers; the national DGT CSL layers; and CHA layers. To this end, we aim to assess what type of changes can be studied through each type of layer, their associated sources of uncertainty and the relevance and utility of the Portuguese backdating approach to produce a consistent time-series of LULC maps. The results prove how the Portuguese CORINE layers distributed by the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service contain important sources of uncertainty, which however have been removed through the national backdating methodology. This methodology can be therefore exported for the production of CORINE in other European countries.publishersversionpublishe

Intellectual Structure of CORINE Land Cover Research Applications in Web of Science: A Europe-Wide Review

    No full text
The objective of this paper is to manifest the intellectual and cognitive structure of CORINE Land Cover (CLC) research applications. Data from the Web of Science (WoS) was used to delimit publication on CLC during the period from 1985 until 2019 (29th April), retrieving a total of 873 documents. Through author citations, the origins and the most influential papers were identified. The main lines of research were identified from word co-occurrences extracted from the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the papers. In the view of both structures, it can be concluded that CORINE land cover constitutes a relatively young set of scientific data, with a constant expansion and a strongly interdisciplinary structure. The development of this application is dependent on the knowledge of such research areas as geography, remote sensing, ecology, forestry, agriculture, engineering, optics, and/or computer science. We believe that this information could be very useful for CLC users, as it reflects a large-scale analysis of the research lines of CLC and illuminates how research has changed over time in diverse areas of applications. Moreover, this study is intended to offer a useful tool for the CLC scientific community, showcasing the main research lines and the most noteworthy papers. Finally, the methodology used in this study can be replicated in many other fields of science to explore its intellectual and cognitive structure

A short review of the Dutch coast

    No full text
This report about the Dutch coast was written in the context of the experimental phase of the programme CORINE of the Commission of the European Communities. The programme CORINE (COoRdination of INformation on the Environment) is a programme for the gathering, coordinating and ensuring of the environment and natural sources in the Community. The objective of the project ' coastal erosion', as part of the CORINE-programme, is to provide a cartography and a database of the risks of coastal erosion in the Community. This report has grown out of the objectives of the project and the activities and agreements of the working group involved. However, some parts of the contents may be interesting to a wider group. In the text you will often find the notation NUTS followed by a number. The NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) is an interlocking system of territorial units at three levels. The used level III is the finest one.Corin

HRM and Fit: Survival of the fittest!?

    No full text
What is the nature of ‘fit’ in strategic HRM? This is the question guiding this thesis. Although the idea of fit is theoretically convincing, empirical evidence to support the role of fit is limited. Previous studies on fit have mainly focused on the alignment between HRM and strategy (strategic fit) and the alignment of HR practices with each other such that they form a consistent HR system (internal fit). Criticism of current research includes that there has been a lack of attention to dynamics and employee interests, and a lack of sophistication in the description of fit. Conceptualizations and operationalizations of fit in HRM need refining. This thesis reports research on five types of fit: strategic, internal, organizational, and institutional fit from the strategic HRM field, and person-environment fit from the applied psychology literature. First, new conceptualizations and operationalizations of fit in HRM are developed and evaluated using qualitative case study data from three Dutch organizations. Next, we aim to bridge organizational and individual level HRM research by assessing the contribution of person-environment fit to the strategic HRM field using employee survey data from two organizations. Finally, the possible effectiveness of fit for different stakeholders is explored. Does fit make a difference to organizations? This research provides insight in the different elements that make up fit. Results indicate that the different types of fit are interrelated, and that person-environment fit provides a valuable contribution to strategic HRM as it plays a significant role in explaining the relationship between HRM perceptions and employee attitudes and behaviors. Also, ‘adaptive capabilities’ are important for achieving a strong fit in the long run. This thesis concludes with an evaluation of the fit concept and an exploration of possible benefits of achieving a fit for organizations
