    Sarcofagi di Ostia

    The necropolises of Ostia and Porto have yielded a very great number of sarcophagi. Few of them are of Attic and Microasiatic production, while from the typological and decorative point of view the bulk belongs to the repertory of urban production covering a considerable chronological span, from the 1st to the late 4th century AD. On the evidence of the iconographic, technical and stylistic peculiarities many of the sarcophagi can be attributed to the production of the local workshop. Actually, the sarcophagi published in the series of volumes of the Corpus Die Antiken Sarkophagreliefs or in the later contributions offer a picture of the finds from Ostia and Porto that remains only partial. Illustrating the present state of knowledge of this class of material, the author presents a number of unpublished sarcophagi decorated with Dionysiac and marine themes, with hunting and grape-harvest scenes, with erotes, garlands and single myths. In particular, analysis is made of some unpublished fragments from sarcophagi depicting the myths of Penteus and the Seven against Thebes – subjects that are rare in Roman funerary sculpture, highlighting the preferences of the workshop and clients of Ostia

    THE FUNERARY STELAI OF ROMAN PERIOD FROM TANAGRA WITH REPRESENTATION OF PERSONS ASSOCIATED TO THE RELIGIOUS SPHERE A great number of funerary stelai, dating from the Hellenistic to the Roman times and bearing relief representations have been found in the area of ancient Boeotia. The author, responsible for the publication of a Corpus of these stelai, presents in this paper six of them from Tanagra, stored in the Schimatari Museum. They are dated to the first and second centuries A.D. The inscriptions do not reveal the social status of the dead, but the funerary iconography reveals their religious beliefs. Neikaro (figs. 1-2) and Stratoneiki (figs. 4-5) are represented in the dress of Isis, Doro (figs. 8-9) and Zoso (fig. 10) as Mainads, while the male (fig. 11) and female figure (fig. 12) on the two other stelai are shown holding in their left hand a caduceus. The deceased wished thus to be preserved for posterity in association with the most important cults of the ancient city of Tanagra: egyptian gods, Dionysos and Hermes. The funerary stelai of Nikaro and Stratoneiki were made in Athens, the rest by local workshops

    Nel contributo si esaminano sculture in marmo o calcare scoperte nella città di Livadeià. Soltanto alcune di esse sono note nella letteratura archeologica. Le sculture sono conservate nel Museo Archeologico di Cheronea, nel Centro Culturale di Livadeià, nel Museo Archeologico di Tebe, nel Museo Archeologico di Atene e nell’Allard Pierson Museum di Amsterdam. Allo stato attuale delle nostre conoscenze soltanto una stele funeraria, perduta, ma nota da una fotografia, e una testa femminile nell’Allard Pierson Museum di Amsterdam sono databili all’inizio del V secolo B. C. Tutte le atre sculture (rilievi, statue, ritratti, stele) sono assegnabili al periodo ellenistico e romano. Esse non provengono dalla loro originaria collocazione, ma spesso sono riutilizzate in edifici di epoca tardo antica.Sculptures from Livadeià. Preliminary observations. The paper examines marble or limestone sculptures found in the city of Livadeia. Only some of them are known in the archaeological literature. The sculptures are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Chaeronea, in Livadeia Cultural Centre, in the Archaeological Museum of Thebes, in the Archaeological Museum in Athens and in the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam. To the best of our knowledge only a funerary stele lost, but known through a photo, and a female head hosted at the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam date to the early fifth century B. C. All the other sculptures (reliefs, statues, portraits, stelae) are assignable to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. They do not come from their original location, but they are often reused in buildings dating back to late antiquity

Studi di storia del collezionismo e della storiograa artistica si propone di dare visibilità alle ricerche di studiosi di storia dellarte, più e meno giovani, impegnati a indagare le testimonianze scrie del passato e, quindi, a elaborare una più consapevole riessione sugli strumenti di indagine storico-critica e sui modi di vedere che appartengono al nostro tempo. Unitamente alla rivista nasce la Biblioteca di Horti Hesperidum, al cui interno saranno nel corso del tempo archiviati testi leerari di interesse storico-artistico, di vario genere ed epoca, dallantichità alletà contemporanea, sui quali troveranno fondamento gli stessi saggi storici pubblicati nei fascicoli della rivista.     The Velletri sarcophagus with the labours of Hercules represents within the funerari production of Roman time san unicum both for the monumentality of its dimensions and for the decorative and figurative apparatus. The bibliography related to the sarcophagus, which has collected in Appendix., shows the interest aroused by the sarcophagus since the finding in 1955. The frontes scenae model used for the architectural scanning of the chest and the influence of Attic and Microasiatic funerary productions, is emphasized by other examples as it has been noticed by scholars. The other sarcophagi found in Velletri and its surroundings point out even more the exceptionality of the exemplar with the labours of Hercules in the area. It has been assumed that its collocation in the Arcioni district is due to the medieval reuse, for it was originally elsewhere
