An assessment of the impact of possible CAP reform scenarios on Romanian agriculture
Using a simplified model, with key-variable the prices of two different possible scenarios of CAP reform after 2013 (moderate and radical), this paper present a comparison between the price effects of implementation of each reform scenario at 2015 horizon on Romanian agriculture. This short analysis shows that, under the presented hypotheses, the net welfare effect, due to the price changes, for the selected products, is positive in both reform scenarios, yet greater in the case of the radical reform. Integrated in the large context of Romanian development, it seems that the influence of CAP reform upon agriculture and rural areas will be most likely a gradual one: an interpenetration between the two scenarios is foreseeable, starting with the moderate reform that will dominate the period around 2013, the reform measures acquiring a more radical character afterwards.CAP reform, Romania, welfare effects, Agricultural and Food Policy,

Development of machine learning classifiers to predict compound activity on prostate cancer cell lines
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. The disease presents good survival rates if treated at the early stages. However, the evolution of the disease in its most aggressive variant remains without effective therapeutic answers. Therefore, the identification of novel effective therapeutics is urgently needed. On these premises, we developed a series of machine learning models, based on compounds with reported highly homogeneous cell-based antiproliferative assay data, able to predict the activity of ligands towards the PC-3 and DU-145 prostate cancer cell lines. The data employed in the development of the computational models was finely-tuned according to a series of thresholds for the classification of active/inactive compounds, to the number of features to be implemented, and by using 10 different machine learning algorithms. Models’ evaluation allowed us to identify the best combination of activity thresholds and ML algorithms for the classification of active compounds, achieving prediction performances with MCC values above 0.60 for PC-3 and DU-145 cells. Moreover, in silico models based on the combination of PC-3 and DU-145 data were also developed, demonstrating excellent precision performances. Finally, an analysis of the activity annotations reported for the ligands in the curated datasets were conducted, suggesting associations between cellular activity and biological targets that might be explored in the future for the design of more effective prostate cancer antiproliferative agents. Rich, Sturmian, and trapezoidal words
In this paper we explore various interconnections between rich words, Sturmian words, and trapezoidal words. Rich words, first introduced by the second and third authors together with J. Justin and S. Widmer, constitute a new class of finite and infinite words characterized by having the maximal number of palindromic factors. Every finite Sturmian word is rich, but not conversely. Trapezoidal words were first introduced by the first author in studying the behavior of the subword complexity of finite Sturmian words. Unfortunately this property does not characterize finite Sturmian words. In this note we show that the only trapezoidal palindromes are Sturmian. More generally we show that Sturmian palindromes can be characterized either in terms of their subword complexity (the trapezoidal property) or in terms of their palindromic complexity. We also obtain a similar characterization of rich palindromes in terms of a relation between palindromic complexity and subword complexity

Jet lag syndrome and circadian disorders of the sleep-wake cycle
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders (CRSDs) are related to alterations in circadian timekeeping system or misalignment between endogenous circadian rhythm and exogenous factors, such as desidered or socially required time schedules, that affect sleep timing or duration. The most commonly observed are jet lag disorder, advanced and delayed sleep phase disorder, free-running disorder, and irregular sleep-wake disorder. The clinical picture may include sleep loss, fatigue, cognitive and vigilance deterioration and hormonal and gastrointestinal distress. Therapeutic management involves interventions aimed at mitigating symptoms affecting sleep and vigilance, and facilitating adaptation to the desired circadian schedule. Appropriately, scheduled bright and dim light exposure and melatonin administration are the main therapeutic tools together with sleep hygiene and chronotherapy. Excessive daytime sleepiness may benefit from short strategic naps and caffeine, whereas bedtime hypnotics may have favorable effect on sleep latency and maintenance. Melatonin and appropriately timed bright light exposure are effective in enhancing new time zone adaption, particularly for stays longer than 3-5 days, whereas short stopover may not benefit
