Intelligent remote sensing systems based on microwave photonic technologies
This paper presents some recent evolutions of the concept of photonics-based radar. In particular, it reports on the coherent MIMO radar network and on the wideband RF scanning receiver, discussing their potentials
Revolutionizing optical fiber transmission and networking using the Orbital Angular Momentum of light
Invited Talk at Optical Interconnects Conference 2016 – San Diego, May 9-11 2016
Abstract:
The talk will present the objectives, the motivations and the results obtained within the European H2020 ROAM project: “Revolutionizing optical fiber transmission and networking using the orbital angular momentum of light”.
ROAM addresses the architectural limitations of inter and intra data center connectivity,
and the limitations of current optical transmission technologies.
Its overall objective is to investigate and demonstrate the use of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes of light for communications and networking.
Two are the primary targets:
-The use of OAM modes in optical fibers as a disruptive means of increasing optical fiber transmission capacity for short-reach high data density applications. To this purpose specialty fibers are being developed to support OAM modes transmission.
- The use of OAM domain as a switching resource in conjunctions with the wavelength domain to significantly improve the scalability and the power consumption of the switches in data-centers applications.
To this purpose integrated high performance OAM components based on silicon photonics technology are being developed
