Malignant mesothelioma: Epidemiology
Primary malignant neoplasms of the pleura and peritoneum originate from the mesothelial cells that line the respective cavities. The majority of these tumors are mesotheliomas. Mesothelioma is a relatively rare but very severe neoplasm, Exposure to asbestos (primarily on the workplace) is the main cause of mesothelioma. All types of asbestos fibers cause mesothelioma, but the potency of amphiboles is greater than that of chrysotile. The main determinant of mesothelioma risk is time since first asbestos exposure; duration and level of exposure play a minorrole. © Springer-Verlag London 2014

The article, organised in the form of a discussion, aims to analyse the themes and motifs of Paolo Di Paolo’s works that are addressed to young audiences. The author has recently published a large number of volumes directed just at younger readers. When beholding the titles that constitute the author’s bibliography, the reader is struck by Di Paolo’s predisposition to transform literary classics: as much in Giacomo il signor bambino as in the edition of the Divina Commedia, the author’s goal is to try to reach his new readers. Therefore, Di Paolo proves to be a prolific author of the genre; in fact, in his bibliography, volumes of fairy tales with a classic slant, such as La mucca volante, are listed as well.L’articolo contiene un’analisi di temi e di motivi delle opere di Paolo Di Paolo dirette al pubblico più piccolo. L’autore negli ultimi anni ha pubblicato un cospicuo numero di volumi indirizzati, infatti, proprio ai lettori più giovani. Ciò che stupisce scorgendo i titoli che costituiscono la bibliografia dell’autore, è la predisposizione a trasformare i classici della letteratura: tanto in Giacomo il signor bambino quanto nell’edizione della Divina Commedia l’obiettivo è cercare di raggiungere i lettori più giovani. Diesel exhaust exposure and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a meta-analysis
Objective: We aimed at carrying out a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies on the association between occupational and non-occupational exposures to diesel exhaust and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the literature and identified 16 cohort studies and 7 case-control studies that analyzed non-Hodgkin lymphoma alone or combined with Hodgkin lymphoma or multiple myeloma, from which we extracted 29 independent risk estimates. We performed random-effects meta-analyses for ever-exposure to diesel exhaust, overall and after stratification for outcome and study design. Results: The meta-relative risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma was 0.97 (95% confidence interval, 0.93-1.01; P-heterogeneity = 0.43). The meta-relative risk of results of cohort studies was 0.97 (95% confidence interval, 0.94-1.01) that of case-control studies was 1.00 (95% confidence interval, 0.84-1.17). Similar results were obtained when the meta-analysis was restricted to studies that analyzed only non-Hodgkin lymphoma. There was no indication of publication bias. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis provided no overall evidence of an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in subjects exposed to diesel exhausted
Lung cancer (exposure assessment, pathology, and epidemiology)
Lung cancer is the most common malignancy worldwide and the most common cause of a cancer-related death. Tobacco smoking is the most important cause of lung cancer in most populations although occupational exposures cause an increased risk of lung cancer more than any other malignancy. This chapter will review the histomorphology and classification of carcinoma of the lung and the evidence for specific occupational exposures reported to cause lung cancer. © Springer-Verlag London 2014
Laryngeal cancer
Laryngeal cancer affects mainly heavy smokers and excessive drinkers. The evidence fora causal association is strong for asbestos and strong inorganic acid mists. The relative risk of laryngeal cancer among workers exposed to asbestos is in the order of 1.5–2.0, with limited evidence of a gradient in risk according to duration or level of exposure. Several other agents have been suggested to increase the risk of laryngeal cancer, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, wood dust, diesel engine exhaust, and organic solvents, but the evidence is weak and inconsistent. An increased risk has been reported for occupational groups with exposure to known carcinogens (e.g., cooks, waiters, plumbers) and for other groups without clear exposure to known carcinogens (e.g., shoe workers). © Springer-Verlag London 2014
