No full textIn a wide-ranging oral history interview, Josephine Boecker discusses her service in the American Red Cross in the South Pacific from September 1943 to September 1946. Boecker says she was contacted by the Red Cross and later called for war service and recalls anticipating being sent to North Africa and being surprised when she found herself on a train bound for the west coast. Boecker talks about activities on board ship during the four week trip to New Guinea, the reception the nurses received from the soldiers when they came ashore and being assigned to the 47th General Hospital near Milne Bay where Red Cross workers staffed recreation programs. She describes camp conditions, sanitation, food, the malaria epidemics, finding activities to keep the troops occupied, and spending her leave in Australia and later following the Army to the Philippines. Boecker says that she was overjoyed when she heard the news of the dropping of the atomic bomb and that the war was over. She says she was later and shipped to Japan to staff a hospital in Tokyo and discusses the destruction she saw and the effects that the U.S. occupation had on Japanese society. Boecker says that she believed she was headed to North Africa and was surprised when she found herself aboard a train bound for the west coast and duty in the Pacific. She describes the four week trip to New Guinea, being stationed at the 47th General Hospital near Milne Bay, the camp conditions, sanitation, the food, the steps taken to prevent malaria, the perpetual rain, camp social events, and her job of setting up entertainment and recreation facilities for the troops. She says that she spent her leave in Australia and later moved forward with the troops to the Philippines. Therefore, the aim of this project is to transform available data into quickly readable and beautifully designed dashboards so that executive will have an empowering tool to value data and make better business decisions aligned with the strategy of Boecker®. The SAMAS framework (Shared Values, Activities, Mission, Analytics and Structure), which combines performance management with strategic performance to reach cognitive leadership, is our reference to analyze the company and cater a dashboard management system derived from Boecker® shared values and relevant to its needs. Boecker® understand the importance of data analytics, and this project is the first step towards having data-driven strategies. Based on one-on-one interviews with managers and focus groups with key users, metrics and KPIs were short-listed to build five dashboards for Boecker® key functional areas. These dashboards reflect all aspects of business activities and the company’s performance. They are functional and have as users the head of departments and country manager. Excel was used to execute low cost, dynamic, easy to use and quickly updated dashboards. Managers who experimented the prototypes voiced big interest in implementing the system and granted a buy-in to the project once they felt the efficiency of accessing data intuitively and quickly and the large amount of analysis that can be mined from the metrics used simultaneously. They mostly highlighted the following benefits: auditing data integrity, uncovering new business opportunities, identifying cost-cutting opportunities and recognize changing business environments. Some decision makers pointed the need to add more dashboards serving diverse purposes such as marketing, food safety, forecasting and strategic dashboards..

Perceived Traceability Costs and Benefits in the Italian Fisheries Supply Chain
Get PDFThe paper proposes a model in which it is hypothesized that firm characteristics influence both costs and benefits of traceability. The proposed model differentiates between aggregate measures and specific categories, as well as between expected costs and benefits on the one hand and perceived actual outcomes on the other, and is tested in a series of regression analyses based on a survey sample of 60 Italian fish processors. The findings indicate that firm characteristics are not strongly associated with any specific cost or benefit measure. However, expected overall benefits are highly significantly impacted by firm size and the number of quality management systems certified, while actual overall benefits only by firm size. Finally, the study also finds considerable discrepancies between expected and actual costs and benefits. The managerial implications of the findings are discussed.</span
