Lubomir Tomaszewski – emotionalist

No full text
The article titled „Lubomir Tomaszewski – emotionalist” is dedicated to the work of the artist who died on November 15, 2018. The text reveals both less and more known aspects of Tomaszewski's life and creative work. It is chronologically presents his artistic career, starting from school times and less known facts about the artist's participation in the Warsaw Uprising, which influenced his later work. The author reached little-known documents and works from the Warsaw Rising Museum’s collection. Presenting Lubomir Tomaszewski one can not omit his animal and human figurines and coffee services designed for the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory, which made the artist famous. Successes in this field contributed to the artist's departure to the United States, where he became famous as a sculptor using natural materials such as wood, stone or metal. In the 90s the artist developed his own technique of painting with the use of smoke and fire. This technique allowed him both to reflect his wartime experiences and to create a series of works that show various aspects of movement, such as dancing. At the end of his life, he returned to cooperate with the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory and designed new models of figurines. Lubomir Tomaszewski was the leader of the international artistic assosiation „Emotionalists”, whose members in their works refer to the return to nature

Price and quality competitiveness of socialist countries'exports

In this report the authors have analyzed pricing of the centrally planned economies (CPEs) in the highly competitive export markets of the EC countries in the first half of the 1980s. They found that the CPEs'export prices were lower than prices in both developed and developing countries. Manufactured goods from CPEs were underpriced an average 31 to 45 percent - even more on some commodities. Protection of EC countries doesn't seem to be a factor in CPE underpricing of manufactured goods. This could not be explained either by a deliberate policy of CPEs to penetrate Western markets. The CPEs inability to upgrade manufactured exports that are subject to quotas suggests serious quality constraints on exports of manufactured goods. They appear to underprice their manufactured exports not because of cost advantages that make them more competitive, but because most of their manufactured goods are inferior in quality to their competitors.Environmental Economics&Policies,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Economic Theory&Research,Markets and Market Access,Access to Markets

Dyscritobaeus comitans Tortorici, Caleca, Noort & Masner, 2016, sp. nov.

comitans -group This group includes species without a preoccipital lunula. In the Afrotropical region we recorded two species: Dyscritobaeus. comitans and D. ndokii Tortorici et Caleca sp. nov. Based on an analysis of the description and figures of Dyscritobaeus indicus (Mukerjee, 1994), in contrast to Mineo et al. (2010) and O’Connor & Ashe (2011), both of whom included this species in the orientalis -group, we consider it as belonging to the comitans -group, because of the clear absence of a preoccipital lunula. This species appears to be morphologically very similar to D. comitans, but unfortunately the holotype was not located in the collection of the Department of Zoology, Government Post-Graduate College, Rishikesh or in ZSI centre of Dehradun, India (K. Rajmohana, in litteris); the only difference with D. comitans is the absence of a specillum on T2. This feature was only recently observed and described (Mineo & Caleca 1992) and we suspect that, as previously happened for D. orientalis in Dodd’s original description (1915), the specillum was overlooked by the author and T2 was described as striate.Published as part of Tortorici, Francesco, Caleca, Virgilio, Noort, Simon Van & Masner, Lubomir, 2016, Revision of Afrotropical Dyscritobaeus Perkins, 1910 (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), pp. 1-59 in Zootaxa 4178 (1) on page 10, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4178.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/26163

The Effect of Acetylsalicylic Acid, as a Representative Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug, on the Activity of Myeloperoxidase

No full text
Background: Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or aspirin) is one of the world’s most widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Numerous studies have shown that the long-term use of aspirin may contribute to longer survival among patients with various types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ASA on myeloperoxidase (MPO), which is found at an elevated level in women with ovarian cancer, among others. Methods: The influence of different concentrations of ASA on the chlorinating and peroxidase activity of MPO was analysed. The relationship between the concentration of ASA and the degree of inhibition of MPO activity was determined based on the results. Conclusions: Aspirin has a significant effect on MPO activity. The use of 50 mM ASA resulted in the enzyme activity being inhibited by more than 90%

Prognostic Significance of Survivin Expression in Patients with Ovarian Carcinoma: A Meta-Analysis

Background: Survivin belongs to the protein family of inhibitors of apoptosis (IAP) and is a regulator of the cell cycle and apoptosis. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and prognostic significance of expression survivin in patients with ovarian cancer. Methods: We systematically searched for articles in PubMed, the American Chemical Society (Publications), Medline, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Scopus and the Web of Science. Patient clinical data, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and survivin expression were extracted from individual studies. We performed statistical analysis using the STATA 16 package. Eighteen publications containing data from 2233 patients with ovarian cancer were included in this meta-analysis. Results: We found an adverse effect of survivin expression on OS (risk ratio (HR): 1.60; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.33–1.93, p = 0.00) but this was not observed on DFS (HR: 1.06; 95% CI: 0.55–2.05, p = 0.87). The analysis of clinicopathological parameters showed that survivin expression was associated with the histological grades (G1–2 vs. G3) (odds ratio (OR) = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.34–0.83, p = 0.01) and: International Federation Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage (I–II vs. III–IV) (OR = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.09–0.55, p = 0.00), but it was not significantly correlated with the histological subtype (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.83–1.58, p = 0.42). Conclusions: Our meta-analysis suggests that survivin expression may be a marker of poor prognosis in ovarian cancer. Survivin expression was associated with parameters of greater aggressiveness of ovarian cancer. Prospective studies are needed to confirm our results indicating that survivin expression can be used as an ovarian cancer biomarker
