The genome and proteome of a virulent Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteriophage closely resembling Salmonella phage Felix O1

    No full text
Based upon whole genome and proteome analysis, Escherichia coli O157:H7-specific bacteriophage (phage) wV8 belongs to the new myoviral genus, "the Felix O1-like viruses" along with Salmonella phage Felix O1 and Erwinia amylovora phage φEa21-4. The genome characteristics of phage wV8 (size 88.49 kb, mol%G+C 38.9, 138 ORFs, 23 tRNAs) are very similar to those of phage Felix O1 (86.16 kb, 39.0 mol%G+C, 131 ORFs and 22 tRNAs) and, indeed most of the proteins have their closest homologs within Felix O1. Approximately one-half of the Escherichia coli O157:H7 mutants resistant to phage wV8 still serotype as O157:H7 indicating that this phage may recognize, like coliphage T4, two different surface receptors: lipopolysaccharide and, perhaps, an outer membrane protein

    The Felix: An Island Tale

    No full text
This paperback book of 149 pages is in the same format as Fables from an Island by the same author from 1981. It was available on eBay at the same time and promoted as fables from an island. I have read the prologue and first chapter and found them involving. I want to go on with this book about a handsome young islander who went off to World War II and came back mentally and physically damaged. The title page is signed by J. Stella Sonier. While there are no fables here, this book is a valuable complement to the earlier book by Sonier. And I hope it will find another reader--like me--sometime in the future.Signed by J. Stella SonierJ. The Consistency Of The Erzahihaltung In Buddenbrooks And Felix Krull

    No full text
The person in which Buddenbrooks and Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull are related is one of the factors which establishes the Erzählhaltung. As Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull is written in the first person, everything that is related is seen through the first person or in the first person , for everything that a person has done or seen remains in him. When Krull describes the people and the situations he has met, the reader sees these through Krull, coloured by him, dependent on him. Kurll is the mediator through whom the experiences related come to the reader. As Buddenbrooks is written in the third person the characters and the situation are not seen through a mediator; they are seen through the characters themselves and therefore as independent of any mediator. The reader understands, of course, that it is Thomas Mann, the actual author of both novels, who relates both stories, or more correctly creates both stories, and that therefore everything related is dependent on him. However, Thomas Mann chooses to present Felix Krull as if Krull is writing it, that is from the point of view of Krull, the pretended author, and to present Buddenbrooks from the point of view of the characters. He chooses therefore a different Erzählhaltung for each novel. This thesis intends to show that the Erzählhaltung which is established by the choice of the third person and the first person for Buddenbrooks and for Felix Krull respectively is supported: 1) grammatically by the tense system, 2) semantically by the vocabulary, and 3) stylistically by the methods chosen for the presentation of the speech and thought of the characters and also by the use of interrogative and anticipatory statements. it is important to consider the the tense system as it is a fundamental requirement of any narration. The vocabulary is discussed since it is an intrinsic integrating factor in both Buddenbrooks and Felix Krull. The presentation of the speech and thought of the characters is significant for the Erzählhaltung, because it is by this stylistic means that the characters can be seen through themselves within their own world. Interrogative and anticipatory statement are interesting as they show that even factors, which are not necessary or fundamental requirements of narration, can support the Erzählhaltung. The grammatical, semantic and stylistic support and reinforcement given by the above factors to the Erzählhaltung established by the use of the third and first person make possible a consistency within both novels which binds each into a unified whole.Master of Arts (MA

Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.

Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201

Has the financial crisis spurred demand for stronger state regulation? CEPS Working Document No. 336/September 2010

    No full text
This paper analyses whether the financial crisis has affected citizens’ confidence in the free market economy and whether it has triggered citizens’ demand for a free market economy with stronger state regulations. Using panel data, the paper confirms that citizens’ confidence levels in the free market economy have decreased in most of the largest economies and demand for a free market economy with stronger state regulation has increased on both sides of the Atlantic. After analysing the determinants for citizens’ confidence in the free market economy and demand for a free market economy with stronger state regulation before and after the financial crisis, the author concludes that citizens’ net confidence loss in the free market economy seems to have been driven by rising unemployment rates, and citizens’ demand for stronger state regulation seems to have been driven by the real economic downturn in GDP growth
