Graphic information and visual communication: tools for simplifying knowledge

    No full text
Data processing requires clear objectives and overall vision, communication of outcomes requires simplification. The graphic representation gives visible form to the concept of "analysis and synthesis of data". The contribution presents in the form of methodological notes some explorations in the field of information and visualization as tools of elaboration for knowledge. Some notable references, definitions and examples are given, from which considerations are extended trying to bring the principles of visual communication back to the representation sciences and drawing for engineers and architects

    Graphic Representation and Drawing

Graphic representation is one of the main systems of signs designed by man with the aim of preserving, understanding, and communicating information deemed essential. As a language for eyes, graphic representation benefits from the properties of visual perception. The effectiveness of graphic language has been recognized and studied by many theorists and communication professionals. The contribution represents in the form of notes some initial explorations in the field of infographic and graphic visualization as knowledge processing tools for analyzing and present data as information. There are some remarkable references, definitions and examples, of researchers and information professionals, from which there are extensive considerations that attempt to bring the principles of visual communication to the science of representation and to the drawing discipline for engineers and architects

The best-known activity of Ferenc Pintér (1931-2008), who trained at the Budapest School of Art, is graphic design for publishers. For more than thirty years, in fact, starting in 1961, he worked as an employee in the graphics department of the Mondadori publishing house, producing hundreds of covers for important series and numerous illustrations in which he demonstrated an extraordinary ability to synthesise with highly refined and innovative aesthetic results. Less well known, but equally important, is his activity aimed at designing posters of a social, political and cultural nature. A wide-ranging production that developed continuously alongside that of book covers and illustrations. Pintér used a variety of drawing techniques, including tempera colours and, from the 1970s, felt-tip pens, on highly resistant paper printed on canvas or smooth Schoeller cardboard. Starting from this copious production, the contribution aims to show part of the vast repertoire of Pintér’s grafikus, through different interpretative filters: techniques, composition, contents are examined to allow comparative readings and synoptic pictures. A handbook, a graphic vocabulary of what Ferenc Pintér’s expressiveness has marked in the memory of those who dwell on the cover as an anticipation of the text, a foretaste, an image to be preserved

The concepts of cyberspace and cybertext are of pivotal importance in the understanding of urban environments and their representation. In the context of cyberspace, data and information are represented and manipulated in a virtual space, thereby creating new dimensions of interaction and perception. In these domains, drawing is the preferred medium for integrating disparate thematic worlds and facilitating interaction between individuals with different backgrounds, experiences and goals. The capacity to co-create these spaces, whether through adaptation or emulation of the model of the tangible world, or through the exploration of geometric and emotional liminalities disengaged from natural laws such as gravity, time, spatial and environmental geography, is the focus of this discussion, which takes its cue from the famous dialogue between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan in Italo Calvino's The Invisible Cities. The attitudes of the two are symmetrical: Marco's descriptions are characterised by wonder and curiosity, whereas Kublai's interpretations attempt to categorise them into a precise form through abstraction and generalisation. Marco is a professional traveller and an explorer of new concepts, whereas Kublai is sedentary and has the task of managing power and maintaining order. The objective of this contribution is to undertake a critical reflection on the systems of data, information and knowledge interchange that employ the design media as a site of interaction and integration of skills and visions, like the paradigmatic ones of Marco and Kublai, thereby participating in the structuring of complex virtual urban systems
