No full textMandy Blankenship (Class of 2004) was interviewed by Tia Taylor via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on July 9, 2021. Ms. Blankenship was born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in the north Dallas region. She is the youngest daughter of a white father and a Hispanic mother. While discussing her mixed cultural heritage, she goes into detail about her family ancestry, including narratives about Tejanos and Coahuilans. From kindergarten to college, Ms. Blankenship went to a traditional private school called Trinity Christian Academy, where she became immersed in the art and music programs. Her own family had an artistic background that continued to inspire her fascination with the arts. Before attending SMU, Ms. Blankenship took a gap year, after which she enrolled at SMU due to her proximity to campus and the Meadows program. While she initially wanted to pursue an art degree at the Meadows School, Ms. Blankenship realized she liked the literary aspect of art and ultimately decided to major in English. In her interview she discusses the isolation she initially felt when she arrived on campus, and how her involvement with the campus ministry, the English program, and the study abroad program abated this feeling. She discusses her experiences living on campus, the influence of her professors and mentors, and the many opportunities and relationships she made at SMU. Ms. Blankenship graduated from SMU in 2004 and has used the experiences and lessons she learned while at SMU to pursue her passion for the arts

Lee Anne Blankenship (Sanders ‘80) attended Abilene Christian University between Spring 1978 and Fall 1980 and received a B.B.A in Marketing and Management. ACU is a Church of Christ affiliated liberal arts university which strives to provide its students with a Christian education in a Christ-like environment. Mrs. Blankenship recounts her time at ACU from a Methodist perspective and as someone who did not live in a dormitory. She recounts her time in the business department along with a relationship she observed between her professor and a student. She also discusses the pressure put on women in social clubs and recounts the story of a female student faced with an abortion.
This interview provides primary source information on ACU’s classroom and community culture in regards to gender, sexuality, and race as seen through a non-traditional student’s viewpoint during the late-70s to early-80s
