    Replica symmetry breaking in a colloidal plasmonic random laser with gold-coated triangular silver nanostructures

    Plasmonic random lasers have drawn significant attention recently due to their versatility, low threshold, and the possibility of achieving tunable and coherent/incoherent outputs. However, in this Letter, the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking is reported in intensity fluctuations of a rarely used colloidal plasmonic random laser (RL) illumination. Triangular nanosilver scatter particles produced incoherent RL action when used in a dimethylformamide (DMF) environment in a Rhodamine-6G gain medium. The use of gold-coated triangular nanosilver as the scatterer in place of triangular nanosilver offered a dual contribution of scattering and lower photo-reabsorption, which caused a reduction in the lasing threshold energy of 39% compared to that obtained with the latter. Further, due to its long-term photostability and chemical properties, a phase transition from the photonic paramagnetic to the glassy phase is observed experimentally in the RL system used. Interestingly, the transition occurs at approximately the lasing threshold value, which is a consequence of stronger correlation of modal behaviors at high input pump energies.     This paper offers a critique of the location of social entrepreneurship in the imaginaries of an advanced liberal social economy . Social entrepreneurship is used in a broad sense to refer to innovative, sustainable solutions to social problems, and this paper is agnostic towards organisational structures or the use of earned income which might be understood to circumscribe the practice of social enterprise. This chapter therefore, rejects Reiss’ (1999,1) assertion that social entrepreneurship refers simply to the “application of sound business practices to the operation of non-profit organizations” and is closer to the social innovation school of thought advocated by Dees & Anderson (2006). By doing so, the author asserts the need for nation states to take an active role through policy innovation and the co-ordination of the social economy

    Near white light emission and enhanced photocatalytic activity by tweaking surface defects of coaxial ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanorods

    The enhancement in the emission of visible light in the synthesized coaxial ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanorods (CSNR) has led to the development of a nearly white light-emitting photoluminescent material as confirmed by the calculation of Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates. However, we have fabricated a nearly white light-emitting diode (WLED) by combining a commercial UV LED chip with our CSNR material, and it emits warm white light. The observed increase in the relative intensity of deep level (IDLE) over UV (IUV) photoluminescence emission is attributed to the addition of new defect states during the formation of the shell with a larger thickness as becomes evident from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study. Thanks to the presence of such defect states, whose effective exploitation enabled us to obtain similar to 93% photodegradation of a test dye, namely, methylene blue, in the presence of core-shell ZnO@ZnS heterostructure within only 25min of irradiation of UV-Visible light. Thus, apart from demonstrating the fabrication of a near WLED, we have successfully demonstrated the enhanced photocatalytic performance by tweaking the surface defects of ZnO nanorods via the formation of coaxial ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanorods with various shell thicknesses.
