    Dynamics of biosciences regulation and opportunities for biosciences innovation in Africa: Exploring regulatory policy brokering

    Knowledge brokering has been explored in the innovation literature to understand how different innovation tasks are organised toward technological development. This paper reflects upon the role of different organisations as knowledge brokers in regulatory policy processes towards putting biosciences research into use. It identifies a practical function-based typology that describes four categories of policy brokers who perform different tasks, with the potential to impact biosciences regulatory policy change. The paper concludes with a brief exploration of how policy can support the different functions of regulatory policy brokerage to enhance the translation of biosciences research into use for the benefit of the poor. Using regulatory policy-making in Kenya as an example, it contributes to growing scholarship that seeks to link knowledge emanating from research with policy-making and economic development, particularly in an African context.Biosciences, Biotechnology Regulation, Knowledge Brokers, Policy Brokering, Africa, Kenya

    This 2007 color postcard shows the front of the Administration Building of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. From 1917 to 1970 the building at 1750 Independence Avenue was occupied by Children’s Mercy Hospital. In 1971 it was purchased by the Alumni Association of the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and gifted to the college, now known as Kansas City University. BURN brings final year undergraduate research work to public view in a professional and relevant way. The students represented here have risen to the challenges of doing rigorous research and presenting their work to a wider audience. Their articles show the distance they have travelled during their studies. They also demonstrate the inquiry and critical thinking skills that have been developed. As graduates, they will be able to exploit these valuable skills in their careers, whether they continue in science or whatever path they may choose. Suitable for undergraduate study Coordinated by Dr Martin Luck, School of Biosciences Dr Martin Luck is Associate Professor of Animal Physiology at the University of Nottingham. After reading Animal Physiology at Nottingham, he moved to the University of Leeds to complete a Masters in Steroid Endocrinology and a PhD in Physiology. He carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Southampton and then moved to Hamburg, Germany where he led a research group investigating ovarian follicular development. He returned to Nottingham as an academic in 1990. Dr Luck also has a BA in Mathematics, is a Fellow of the Society of Biology and the Higher Education Academy and is Chair of the Management Board of Bioscience Horizons, the National Undergraduate Research Journal. He has held teaching advisory posts at the University and been a consultant for the Quality Assurance Agency and Higher Education Academy.

It was dedicated to the Memory of Professor Luigi M. Ricciardi (1942-2011), who was a visionary and tireless promoter of the 3 previous editions of the BIOCOMP conference series. We thought that the best way to honor his memory was to continue the BIOCOMP program. Over the years, this conference promoted scientific activities related to his wide interests and scientific expertise, which ranged in various areas of applications of mathematics, probability and statistics to biosciences and cybernetics, also with emphasis on computational problems

    internship report - winter 2017This report keeps track of the author’s internship at AGADA Biosciences in Halifax, Nova Scotia. AGADA Biosciences is a company who specializes in performing pre-clinical studies using murine models. They focus on facilitating orphan drug development for industry, nonprofits, and academic-based groups. During the internship period, the author was assigned a role as software developer to design and build an internal database for AGADA Biosciences with the purpose of efficiently retrieving data from the database. Tasks performed by the author were managing data, designing database models, recommending information systems, building the database, installing and implementing systems, and reporting on progress. This internship is highly related to the Health Informatics program. Knowledge learned from Health Informatics can be applied to all of the required tasks. Most of the problems, such as vague requirements,data quality issues, and time conflicts during the project can be solved with Health Informatics solutions such as drawing ERD and BPMN diagrams. Objectives were met by the end of the internship. The author also learned how to put Health Informatics knowledge into practice and present results to employers. In addition, the author experienced teamwork, working with database management systems, and data processing. Several recommendations are made for the future works.AGADA Bioscience

    Two staff investigated getting students to comment directly on the curriculum design and delivery within Biosciences modules. They have done this in the context of stimulating a dialogue with the students about the learning and teaching approaches they are using, and seeking specific comments which they can use to develop their modules. They have done this on both large and small modules at different levels and through a range of approaches to ‘capturing’ students’ comments, both directly in the classroom and through discussion boards on the Virtual Learning Environment. The outcomes have been both revealing and beneficial and included valuable comments on both the content and the delivery of the modules
