Congenital mitral regurgitation due to 'posterior reinsertion' of chordae tendineae.

    No full text
A rare type of congenital mitral regurgitation is presented for the first time as an isolated cardiac anomaly. The malformation consists of a particular arrangement of the chordae tendineae of the posterior leaflet: the chordae, leaving the free margin or the undersurface, insert into the latter once again. A definition of the anomaly and a classification of all the chordal anomaliesfound in congenital mitral regurgitation are proposed. The clinical picture is briefly reported

Unusual findings of viral production (MuMTV) in murine mammary tumors (BALB/cfC3H).

Some unusual findings of the murine mammary tumor virus (MuMTV) are described in cells of BALB/cfC3H mice mammary tumors: (1) a conspicuous endocellular production of B particles by budding of A particles into small and large cytoplasmic vacuoles, into intracytoplasmic lumina, and possibly into vacuoles of secretion; (2) an extracellular production of B particles (in addition to the classic budding via microvilli) by opening at the cell surface of intracytoplasmic lumina containing mature and immature B particles and possibly of small vacuoles containing immature B particles. Morphological data suggest a virus excretion also by the secretory pathway of the neoplastic cell. Golgi complex is often seen in association with the small type of cytoplasmic vacuoles, whereas the large vacuoles are often close to a particular type of dense body, possibly lysosomes. The occurrence of free B particles in the cytoplasm is also reported. The possibility that the observed features are not occasional but are aspects of the normal life of the MuMTV is suggested

Cytogenesis of murine mammary tumors in BALB/cfC3H and BALB/cfRIII strains.

Biological and morphological differences in the mammary tumors of BALB/cfC3H and BALB/cfRIII mice are due to differences in the causative viruses. The C3H and RIII variants of the murine mammary tumor virus (MuMTV) might give origin to different mammary tumors by transforming different types of cell, i.e. epithelial or myoepithelial cells. The nature (epithelial or myoepithelial) of the neoplastic cells has been investigated by demonstrating their plasma membrane ATPase activities. We found that in normal murine mammary gland both epithelium and myoepithelium have Mg++ dependent ATPase activity, while the myoepithelium shows in addition an Na+K+ dependent ATPase activity. It is suggested that the results obtained exclude the participation of myoepithelium to the neoplastic growth and we ascribe the differences in mammary tumors of the two strains of mice to differences in the mechanisms of action of the virus variants

Ganglioglioma of the spinal cord. A case with a long survival.

    No full text
A case of ganglioglioma or neuroastrocytoma of the spinal cord in a 78-year-old man is reported. Diagnosis was based on the histological identification of the neoplastic cells and on the study of the architecture of the tumour. The presence of cellular anaplasia, sometimes of marked degree, and of small nests of infiltration suggested an initial malignant behaviour regarding both cellular types. A survey of the five reported cases of spinal ganglioglioma is presented

Clinico-pathological correlations in a case of traumatic pan-hypopituitarism

A case of post-traumatic chronic pan-hypopituitarism in a 22 year old man is reported. Post-mortem examination revealed gliosis of the posterior hypothalamus, sclerosis of the neuro-hypophysis, cellular atrophy of the adenohypophysis, with relative hyperplasia of the basophil cells, atrophy of the endocrine target glands. Clinical and morphological findings are correlated and discussed

Clinico-pathological correlations in a case of primary angiosarcoma of the pericardium.

A case of angiosarcoma of the pericardium in a 30-yr-old man is reported. The clinical diagnosis of pericardial neoplasm was assumed on the basis of angiocardiography. The pathological findings of the heart are shown in detail. A survey of the clinico-pathological data in the 15 reported cases of angiosarcoma of the pericardium is presented
