Many solutions of elliptic problems on R^n of irrational slope

    No full text
We consider the problem Δu+Fu(x,u)=0-\Delta u+F_u(x,u)=0 on Rn\R^n, where FF is a smooth function periodic of period 1 in all its variables. We show that, under suitable hypotheses on FF, this problem has a family of non self intersecting solutions uDu_D, which are at finite distance from a plane of slope (\o,0,\dots,0) with \o irrational. These solutions depend on a real parameter DD; if DDD\not=D^\prime, then the closures of the integer translates of uDu_D and of uDu_{D^\prime} do not intersect

We consider the problem Δu+Fu(x,u)=0-\Delta u+F_u(x,u)=0 on Rn\R^n, where FF is a smooth function periodic of period 1 in all its variables. We are going to find a nondegeneracy condition on FF for which the following holds. If we are given a sequence of positive integers {N~i}iZ\{ \tilde N_i \}_{i\in\Z} and a sequence \{ \a_i \}_{i\in\Z} of real numbers (the slopes), then we shall find an increasing sequence {Qi}\{ Q_i\} of integers and a solution uu which is entire, periodic in (x2,,xn)(x_2,\dots,x_n) and which is close to the plane \a_1(x_1-Q_i)+u(Q_i,0,\dots,0) for x1[Qi,Qi+N~i]x_1\in [Q_i,Q_i+\tilde N_i]

Measuring the foundations of school readiness: Introducing a new questionnaire for teachers - The Brief Early Skills and Support Index (BESSI).

BACKGROUND: Early work on school readiness focused on academic skills. Recent research highlights the value of also including both children's social and behavioural competencies and family support. AIMS: Reflecting this broader approach, this study aimed to develop a new and brief questionnaire for teachers: The Brief Early Skills and Support Index (BESSI). SAMPLE: The main sample, recruited from the north-west of England, included 1,456 children (49% male), aged 2.5 to 5.5 years. A second sample consisting of 258 children (44% male) aged 3 to 5.5 years was recruited to assess the test-retest reliability of the BESSI across a 1-month interval. METHODS: Following development and pilot work with early years teachers, a streamlined (30 items) version of the BESSI was sent to 98 teachers and nursery staff, who rated the children in their class. RESULTS: The best-fitting model included four latent factors: Three child factors (Behavioural Adjustment, Language and Cognition, and Daily Living Skills) and one Family Support factor. The three child factors exhibited measurement invariance across gender. All four factors showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Structural equation modelling showed that (1) boys had more problems than girls on all three child factors; (2) older children showed better Language and Cognition and Daily Living Skills than younger children; and (3) children eligible for free school meals (an index of financial hardship) had more problems on all four latent factors. Family Support latent scores predicted all three child latent factors and accounted for their correlation with financial hardship. CONCLUSIONS: The BESSI is a promising brief teacher-report screening tool that appears suitable for children aged 2.5 to 5.5 and provides a broader perspective upon school readiness than previous measures

Equivalent currents for RCS calculations of flat plates. Improvements and applications to surface impedance coatings.

The procedure proposed by F. A. Sikta et al (IEEE Trans. Ant. Prop. , vol. AP-31, pp. 584-585, July 1983) is easily and efficiently improved by conveniently utilizing the uniform geometrical theory (UTD) solution for double diffraction in the far zone of a plane wave. It is shown that the same equivalent-current concept can be applied to treat the case of plates with a dielectric coating, which are approximately represented by a surface-impedance boundary condition. To this end, the solution given by G. D. Maliuzhinets (1958), for the diffraction at the edge of a wedge with two different surface-impedance faces, is suitable to define first-order equivalent currents at the edges of each strip

Radar imaging of noncooperating maneuvering aircraft

The problem of performing automatic high resolution radar imaging of noncooperating maneuvering aircraft is investigated. In order to define the main features of the radar processor, a numerical model of the system which makes use of an electromagnetic model of the moving aircraft so that the actual, complete operating conditions can be simulated has been developed. The availability of such a numerical tool avoids the need to carry out long and onerous experimental tests. In this framework an automatic high-resolution radar imaging technique has been developed. The imaging algorithm provides parameters useful for target classificatio
