Bess of Hardwick: Second Most Powerful Woman of the Elizabethan Age and a Symbol of Modern Thought

    Get PDF
While not a very elegant representation of Bess of Hardwick, this quatrain nevertheless introduces a striking and unique character of an Elizabethan woman. Many studies on Elizabethan women focus on the subjugated place of females in that society. However, women, such as Bess of Hardwick, existed, and did not fit within these stereotypes, much like the poem by one of Bess’ contemporaries indicates. Often, since these women are minorities in sixteenth century England, they are overlooked entirely and not given proper credit for their accomplishments and services to crown and country. This is an ungracious disservice to the women who influenced Elizabethan society, becoming strong leaders. Despite the socio-legal factors working against women in Tudor England, Bess of Hardwick, noblewoman and leader in her own right, defied the odds and held authority often only assigned to men. Not only did she attain considerable wealth, and influence in sixteenth century society, even in the royal succession, but she also broke through the barriers that generally obstructed women of the Elizabethan age, namely inferior position in marriage and society, and confinement to gender stereotypic roles

Bess Nungarrayi Price on the NT Intervention

In this impassioned address Bess Nungarrayi Price defends the controversial Northern Territory Emergency Response otherwise known as the \u27Intervention.\u27 Since the emergency measures were introduced in the Northern Territory in 2007, the intervention has been debated around the country some branding the measures as racist and extreme. In this Peter Howson Lecture for The Bennelong Society Bess Nungarrayi Price, a Walpiri woman from Yuendemu in the N.T. discusses the issues facing her community and explains why she thinks policies such as enforced income management are needed and welcome. Her speech is followed by an address given by her husband of over twenty years David Price about human rights, aboriginal culture and law. Bess Nungarrayi Price was born in Yuendumu, Northern Territory and her first language is Walpiri. She is currently the Chair of the Northern Territory Indigenous Affairs Advisory Council and also works as a cross cultural awareness trainer with her husband David Price. She is a member of the commonwealth government \u27Violence against Women Advisory Group.\u27 David Price, has been married to Bess Nungarrayi Price for over 20 years. They currently work together as cross cultural awareness trainers in the Central Australia region. David Price has professional background in education, training and public administration. Dr Gary Johns is the president of The Bennelong Society and a former Labor MP. &nbsp

A letter to Louisa K. Fast from Bess Armstrong Hawes (Mrs. MC. Armstrong). It is not dated. Louisa K. Fast was a prominent member in the Women's Suffrage Association, which later became the League of Women Voters in 1920. She was employed by the LWV to speak throughout Ohio to encourage women to form local chapters of the group. Later, Miss Fast was employed in the New York office of the International Relations Branch of the LWV. The collection of Louisa K. Fast correspondence are related to the League of Women Voters. This letter is from a private collection and was loaned to the library by Bonnie Boroff. The letter's contents are as follows. Dear Miss Fast: I wish I could stow myself away in your present and go with you. If I could look back over the last few years & feel that I had done half as much for anything as worthwhile as The League of Women Voters & the C & CJ war it would be a very satisfactory feeling. You might be interested to know that when the couple who owned the guppies took them home they made the fresh water too cold & all died (I had no report on the turtle). Thank you for your card. Of course you were too busy to see me & I was in bed or just off it with jaundice & couldn't get to any meetings. Bon Voyage, Bess Armstrong Hawes 1640 21st St. N.W. Washington, D.C

Highly Compact Partial Power Converter for a Highly Efficient PV-BESS Stacked Generation System

    No full text
The inherently intermittent nature of photovoltaic (PV) energy has brought increasing interest towards the integration between PV sources and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). In this paper, a Series Partial Power Processing (PPP) converter based on Capacitive Power Transfer (CPT) is proposed to integrate PV and BESS in a grid-connected inverter system. The proposed converter has been simulated according to a PV string capable to provide 1430 W under full irradiance conditions, a BESS nominal voltage equal to 215 V and a solar inverter assumed to operate with a minimum voltage of 150 V and a maximum current of 10 A. Simulation tests carried out at different conditions of solar radiation and required load power aim at demonstrating the correct operation of the proposed system.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.DC systems, Energy conversion & Storag

The application of BESS in load shedding scheme

    No full text
With new developments in battery technologies, increasing application of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in power system is anticipated in near future. BESS has already been used for primary frequency regulation in the past. This paper examines the feasibility of using BESS with load shedding, in application for large disturbances in power system. Load shedding is one of the conventional ways during large disturbances, and the performance of frequency control will increase in combination with BESS application. According to the latest news, BESS which are applied in high power side will be employed in practice in next 5 year. A simple low order SMR model is used as a test system, while an incremental model of BESS is applied in this paper. As continuous disturbances are not the main concern in this paper, df/dt is not considered in article
