Catalogue of the Islamic Manuscripts from the Kahle Collection in the Department of Oriental Studies of the University of Turin
The work includes the description of the almost 300 Arabic, Persiana and Turkish manuscripts preserved in the Department of the Orientaltusies of the University of Turin. The cllection belonged originally to the German Orientalist Paul Kahle. The three authors have divided their works according to their expertize: all of them contributed to the Introduction, R. Tottoli described the contents of the 250 ca. Arabic items, M. Bernardini of he Persian and Turkish items and M.L. Russo described material supports and prepared the codicological description of each netry
Inventory of the manuscripts preserved in the Kahle’s Archive at the University of Turin (not included in the printed Catalogue edited by R. Tottoli, M.L. Russo, M. Bernardini)
The manuscripts were discovered during the reorganization of the materials in the Archive of Paul Kahle and were thus not included in the printed catalogue (R. Tottoli - M.L. Russo - M. Bernardini, "Catalogue of the Islamic manuscripts from the Kahle Collection in the Department of Oriental Studies of the University of Turin", Rome 2011). Most of these manuscripts relates to the shadow play, literature, religion and folklore.

Realtà, realismo, straniamento : Auerbach e il romanzo cavalleresco fino a Cervantes
Auerbach’s research, besides exploring the three main fields the author explicitly names (i.e. the succession of different and differently grounded forms of realism in literary fiction, the alternate splitting and melting of styles, the link between literary work and a Christian vision of the world), in various chapters of Mimesis, and particularly in chs. 2, 6, 12, 14 and 20, is also focused, albeit only implicitly, on the developments of a further distinctive feature in Western literature, which is the emergence of subjectivity in the representation of reality. Focusing mainly on the chapter on courtly romance (ch. 6) and on the Quijote (ch. 14), this essay will examine Auerbach’s interpreting work on texts that adopt, in different ways, a ‘subjective point of view’; this kind of interpretation is, in part, unexpectedly similar to the approach of other critics and theorists of literature contemporary to Auerbach, like Bachtin, Américo Castro and Viktor Šklovskij
Shedding light on the black hole: The roll-out of broadband access networks by private operators
Several market studies have indicated that the roll-out of broadband has significant economic and social relevance. The investments in broadband infrastructures needed to realise these economic and social benefits are, however, high-risk. This is firstly caused by the fact that the roll-out of access networks is extremely costly and requires high initial investments. Moreover, the multidisciplinary environment and involvement of many actors with diverging objectives and interests cause high complexity. Moreover, the market for broadband is changing fast and continuously. Although broadband has been on the academic research agenda for quite some time, this has as yet not resulted in a structured insight into the decision-making process around the upgrading of broadband networks, seen from the perspective of private operators and taking into account the vast complexity of the surroundings in which this decision-making process takes place in. The objective of this research was to provide a unifying theory combining technical, economic, market-related and regulatory factors with regard to an evolutionary, flexible approach of network upgrading from a decision-maker perspective. The result of this research is a robust, explanatory, parsimonious model for the impact and outcomes of broadband roll-out. This model provides a certain degree of stability in this multidisciplinary, unpredictable and highly dynamic research field.Technology, Policy and Managemen
kinetic expression HO and NOS genes in LPS-stimulated porcine aortic endothelial cells
It was well demonstrated that Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces apoptosis in many cellular types including Porcine Aortic Endothelial Cells (PAEC) (Bernardini et al, 2005. Cell Stress & Chaperones 10(4):340-8). Heme oxygenase (inducible HO-1 and constitutive HO-2) and nitric oxide synthase (inducible iNOS and endothelial eNOS) are in some way involved in LPS-induced apoptosis (Henningsson et al, 2001. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 280:1242-1254).
HO-1 protective effects (Zuckerbraun et al, 2003. J Exp Med 198(11):1707-1716; Sarady et al, 2004. FASEB J 18(7):854-6) and nitric oxide (NO) controversial role (Mehta, 2005. Vascul Pharmaco 43(6):390-403) as well as their relationship are not fully understood.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the kinetic induction of HO-1, iNOS, HO-2 and eNOS mRNA by LPS treatment in a primary culture of PAEC.
EXPERIMENT 1. PAEC were exposed to LPS 10μg/ml for 1, 7, 15 and 24 hours. To detect HO-1, iNOS, HO-2 and eNOS mRNA expression Real Time quantitative PCR was performed. Cell Death Detection Elisa kit (Roche, Germany) was used to evaluate the apoptosis rate.
LPS induced apoptosis after 7 hours of treatment. At this time both HO-1 and iNOS reached their peak of expression, while eNOS mRNA level decreased. HO-2 mRNA expression was not affected by LPS treatment.
EXPERIMENT 2. To better evaluate earlier differences in the HO-1, iNOS, HO-2 and eNOS mRNA expression, PAEC were exposed to LPS 10μg/ml for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 hours.
Both iNOS and HO-1 mRNA level increased significantly at 2 hours, then iNOS reached the plateau at 3 hours, while HO-1 reached the maximum level at 4 hours. eNOS mRNA decrease is confirmed being significative at 5 hours.
Taking together our data show a similar kinetic trend of HO-1 and iNOS mRNA expression in our model of LPS-induced apoptosis. Therefore, further studies are required to investigate the interactions among these enzymes and their relative products
Lo Sehhrengiz-i Borusa di Lami‘i Çelebi come fonte storica
The work is devoted to a literary genre (the shahrashub/shehrengiz) as it was utilised by an Ottoman author of the 16th century for the celebration of Bursa
“Maistre (certa)”. Niveaux de savoir et conception du monde chez Guillaume IX d’Aquitaine
Starting with a study by M. Black (Models and Archetypes, 1958), the author examines the possibility of broadening this heuristic perspective to include literature. In particular, she analyses a text by William IX, in which the troubadour seems identify himself with God
Effect of tributyltin on mammalian endothelial cell integrity
AbstractTributyltin (TBT), is a man-made pollutants, known to accumulate along the food chain, acting as an endocrine disruptor in marine organisms, with toxic and adverse effects in many tissues including vascular system. Based on the absence of specific studies of TBT effects on endothelial cells, we aimed to evaluate the toxicity of TBT on primary culture of porcine aortic endothelial cells (pAECs), pig being an excellent model to study human cardiovascular disease. pAECs were exposed for 24h to TBT (100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000nM) showing a dose dependent decrease in cell viability through both apoptosis and necrosis. Moreover the ability of TBT (100 and 500nM) to influence endothelial gene expression was investigated at 1, 7 and 15h of treatment. Gene expression of tight junction molecules, occludin (OCLN) and tight junction protein-1 (ZO-1) was reduced while monocyte adhesion and adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1) levels increased significantly at 1h. IL-6 and estrogen receptors 1 and 2 (ESR-1 and ESR-2) mRNAs, after a transient decrease, reached the maximum levels after 15h of exposure. Finally, we demonstrated that TBT altered endothelial functionality greatly increasing monocyte adhesion. These findings indicate that TBT deeply alters endothelial profile, disrupting their structure and interfering with their ability to interact with molecules and other cells
