    No full text

On Bergmann’s Reading of the Tractatus Ontology

    No full text

Gustav Bergmann, New Foundations of Ontology

The formal ontology here presented is what we might call a typed combinatorial Meinongian mereology. Its author seeks to formulate the laws, here called ‘canons’, regulating how entities can combine together in wholes of different sorts. The method, as in Bergmann’s earlier works, involves the construction of an ideal language of such a sort that the analysis of complex wholes can be achieved by transforming our natural-language representations of reality into what we might think of as artificial characteristic maps or diagrams which allow the relevant ontological structures to be read off immediately from the symbolic representations which results. In former works Bergmann had held that the symbolic language of Principia Mathematica could serve as the appropriate diagrammatic device for the standard first-order functional calculus and develops instead a new sort diagrammatic languag

Bergmann on Perceiving, Sensing, and Appearing

In this study I am going to present and discuss some of the central themes of Gustav Bergmann\u27s theory of perception. I shall be concerned, however, only with later Bergmann, that is, with the perceptual theory worked out in a series of essays in which Bergmann shifts from phenomenalism to a form of intentional realism. This label ( intentional realism ) indicates the two dominant themes in Bergmann\u27s later thought about perception: perceivings are analyzed as mental acts (thoughts) which are intentionally related to real and mind-independent objects and states of affairs. In a timely essay, Intentionality (1955) Bergmann presented an impressive defense of mental acts, and although the framework of that essay was still phenomenalistic, the structural analysis of mental acts and their intentionality presented there has not been significantly altered by Bergmann in later writings. In two subsequent essays, Acts (1960) and Realistic Postscript (1963) his realistic turn was worked out in detail in the context of giving a satisfactory account of ordinary perceptual experience. These three essays will comprise the core texts of the study that follows

    Gustav Bergamann

Gustav Bergmann’s activity may be divided in three phases. The first one is mainly concerned with the philosophy of science, more or less in accordance with the teachings of the Vienna Circle. The second consists in the development of a rich ontology ¬– yet constrained by the principle of acquaintance –, aiming at establishing a realist view, both in the sense of realism1 (opposed to nominalism), and in that of realism2 (opposed to idealism). Such development goes along with a reflection on the nature and method of philosophy, culminating with one of the most perspicuous formulations of the ideal language method. The last phase, known mainly through posthumous writings, puts forth a revision of the previous ontology. In this account special attention has been paid to the second phase, for which Bergmann is mostly known, and its methodological aspects have been privileged in the exposition.L'attività di Gustav Bergmann (Vienna 1906 – Iowa City 1987) si può dividere in tre fasi.
