À partir d’une réflexion autour de la réception différenciée de la photographie par des publics noirs et des publics blancs, Martin A. Berger interroge comment la construction sociale des regards détermine les interprétations. Contre l’évidence, il révèle comment la charge supposée critique d’une photographie en apparence « limpide » est neutralisée dans le regard dominant.The article focuses on an iconic photograph of the civil rights struggle taken by American photographer Bill Hudson in 1963. Based on a reflection on the differentiated reception of the photography by black and white audiences, Martin A. Berger questions how the social construction of the gaze determines interpretations. Against the evidence, he reveals how the supposed critical charge of an apparently “limpid” photograph is neutralized in the dominant gaze
